Helping a neighbour sort out an old bike. It needs a new wheel and tyre. The tyres are 28″ is this the same as 700c?

    probably.

    check this

best bet is to measure in mm.

Yes, 28″ is just another name for 700c for old road bikes. Mrs BigJohn’s pub bike has tyres marked with both 28″ and 700c.

So 28″ and 29″ are the same size, while 27″ wheels are bigger.

Thanks guys, anything I need to look out for? It’s the rear wheel that needs replacing, it looks like the cassette is a screw on type. If I buy a wheel with the standard shimano freehub system is it going to cause me any problems?

I feel like a newbie again, give me nice standard 26″ stuff anyday.

Not necessarily. What rims does it have – are they flat?

    I have a set of 28″ rims which are 635mm, 27″ which are 630mm, and 29er 700c rims are 622mm, but sometimes called 28″.

Last time I needed a wheel with a screw on block I got one from Halfords very cheap. Make sure the hub width is the same.
