1) Final Fantasy 7
2) Homeworld
3) The original Quake, with the Trent Reznor soundtrack
4) Every Grand Theft Auto game. But most especially the first one (1)
5) Stalker SOC

Most of the others I can think of are really just lists of songs rather than soundtracks worked into the game. Which is fine, but not really the same- another classical playlist for a strategy game, another list of rock or dance songs for a driving game... I suppose most of the GTA games are like this but they do work to keep the tracklists thematic and appropriate.

(1)

It was back in 1849,
At the Springfield Golden Nugget Mine,
That my great-grandma Dolores saved the day,
When she propped the shaft and saved the lives,
Of the other forty Springfield wives,
When all my grandpa's buddies ran away

The menfolk found their women scary,
Cos they were so big and hairy,
They thought of dynamite to seal them in

Gramps was known as 'Chapped Lips Calhoun',
He was in the local saloon,
In came Billy-Joe Walton through the door,
He said "They've blown the Golden Nugget!"
My grandaddy said "Oh ....darn it!"
"You've buried my Dolores, my sweet little golden 'ore"
Swing it, son

Now my grandaddy jumped up from his table,
Finished his jug,
And he got up to that mine just as lickety-darn-split as he could,
Stopped off to fetch a shovel,
Feed the dogs,
Brush his teeth,
Clean the John,
And give his horse one final rubdown

Cos a cowboy's life ain't easy and a cowboy's life is hard,
You can take him from the saddle,
But he'll be forever scarred

Cos my grandpa was a man in love,
Called Dolores his 'prairie dove',
And he told her that he loved her with every sigh

Cos she never once forgave him,
Even underneath the cave-in,
But he knew she would forgive him,
In that goldmine in the sky

[DJ]
Oh yeah, goin' all the way back there,
That was the Ballad of Chapped Lips Calhoun by the late Sideways Hank O'Malley and the Alabama Bottle Boys,
And you know, that was so good ah reckon ah'll play it again

The Trent Reznor stuff for Quake was great. IIRC he did some stuff for Doom 3 as well didn't he?

Vice City would probably be my favourite of the GTAs, every single station really struck the 80s note in its own different way. The talk radio station from GTA3 was hilarious though, they haven't done any as good as that since.

The Medieval/Rome Total War games were pretty special for dramatic orchestral stuff too, nothing like the tense strings suddenly erupting into horns and drums when you launched your ambush and a dozen units of cavalry suddenly charged out from the treeline...

i'm pretty sure the wipeouts have always been compilations, with the likes of chemical brothers, sasha, underworld etc. on them, from the first one onwards. pwei may have appeared on one of them, though.

I think the link with the Poppies was that they used the same designers. Mind you, my mind was addled with chemicals back then.

GTA SA has some good ones...

"All my ex's live in Texas,
And Texas is a place I'd dearly love to be.
But all my ex's live in Texas
And that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee."

Jesus. I thought I was an fairly committed gamer but for the life of me I can't remember a single computer game soundtrack.

Chapeau. I am weak in the face of your experience.

Turrican 2 had a great sound track, I know always turn music off in game as soon as I start them with very few exceptions. GTA4 being one of them which has some great tunes.

and live 😯

Any of the adverts from the radio stations in the GTA games, some absolute classics....... 'Life is just a merciful blur, when you pop a pisswasser'

Duke Nukem's soundtrack is pretty awesome.

But my favourite would have to be American McGee's Alice. Excellent.
