here’s a picture of the Busso from my 166 (pictured in the Classy Cars thread) preceeded with a picture of the GM (!) engine from the 159

That Busso is an amazing motor - had a 2.5 V6 in my old 156, it sounded like an F1 car and revved so smoothly. It also drank like an F1 car though. Got to love those chrome intake trumpets.

Yep - the diesel engine in the 159 is a GM design, shared with Saab and whatnot. The 159 is an interesting car - designed on a premium platform to be shared with GM, Saab etc the other two manufacturers dropped out and Alfa carried this unique platform alone.

@paino, that’s very nice. I bet that’s noisy as hell. Going out in the Aston is noisy, I had a TVR and that was just deafening, couldn’t go out before 10am as it woke everyone up!
I have no taste or knowledge about cars but I get sudden urges to spend on something useless!
In fact I’ve got an urge to buy an old
911, no money for it and no room. No idea why I want one either. I had a 993 when they were new and guess I fancy another, but honestly I actually have no real interest in cars.
Mrs W has already said no, she has other priorities at the moment.....but the plan is to grind her into submission!! (And not in a rude way!!!) Maybe for my 50th in 2 years.

64 plate Partner Teepee Outdoor. People take the piss on a regular basis but I bloody love it but would like something bigger. The loan, which is paid for by company opt out, finishes in May but I'm going to keep it till van prices hopefully come down a bit.

@woodster very much so. I do love the theatrics of the thing. I mean it’s stupid loud, to the point it’s actually a bit embarrassing to boot it up. Luckily the immediate neighbours are petrol heads so they’ve no issues with my 6a.m starts 😂. The 13 year old in me smiles when I see a tunnel though.

Daily driver is one of these:

It's so dull and generic that I don't have an actual photo of it but it looks exactly like this but with a towbar and I love it for it's boring reliability and anonymity.

Technically own this but it's my mum's:

Surprisingly good for what it is and lots of toys, none of which she uses!

Oh and this:

My two.

The old 110, rebuilt 11 years ago onto a new chassis as a restomod. I tend to use it for a few months and then SORN it again for a couple of months as the mode takes me.

And the T5 which is my multipurpose truck of choice.

Crikey you don't see T5s doing real work that often in the UK. In Germany & Austria they're ubiquitous

I'll see if I can post up some images later - definitely in the vulgar German car camp here

Mercedes eclass estate E43 -with towbar for bike rack
Posche 911 (991.2) with roof rack for bikes
Lotus Elise 250 Cup - definitely not for bikes

Have any of you bought/subscribed to this?

https://theroadrat.com/

It's hilariously high brow and deeply pretentious but all the better for it. Each issue is massive with almost zero ads, big wodges of well written text and beautiful images. They did a free tiny weekly version during the first lockdown, if you want to get a flavour of it:

https://theroadrat.com/pages/the-ratchet

The first issue I bought was the second one, opened it sitting on the plane going on holiday, and proceeded to unfold a four page blueprint of the 917, before getting lost in an article about Piech's story behind its creation. Personally I'd like more engineering in there, but we're a bit short of LJK Setright's.

Going back to the beginning, I've a slightly battered FN2 that will be looking for a new home shortly...  Will be cheap if anyone needs to scratch that itch...

Here's my Leon estate on the day I bought it, July 2020.
Given how little I've used it because of lockdown I kind of regret not buying something stupid for a couple of years until things got back to normal.

No pictures but I’ve got a BMW 218d Sport Active Tourer (Nan series) currently which has been surprisingly good for the last 4 years. That’s going imminently, I’ve just ordered a new Kuga that should arrive by the end of the month. Only the little engine, but the lease deals were super cheap. Can’t wait, not had a new car for ages!

1990 Mk2 Golf. ‘Entry-level classic’ that can still do the daily duties, cruise on the motorway and haul kids and bikes.
All that as well as being one of the greats when it comes to everyday car design IMHO. The late 80’s were a great era for well engineered German cars.

Interestingly, something I also subscribe to and am hoping to add a certain special 1989 Merc S124 to my fleet soon.

There is a distinct absence of German estate cars.

OK then, 2011 Passat Bluemotion 103k miles, most by previous owner. I've cycled further than I've driven in the past 12 months.

PS some of you people really enjoy cleaning your cars.

Hope to soon be the ex-owner of this....

Will replace with a bigger van that you can sleep in and have the bikes safely inside.

Still debating what to do with this...

Don't want to get rid, but don't have much use for it now that the GF has a ten minute bike ride to work. Nice car to drive buzz along alone roads.

This old thing.

Bought it at 10 months old. Car was registered before they were released in the UK. Nissan Primera 1.8 SVE petrol. Loads of toys, reversing camera (for a 19 year old car) sat nav, CD changer etc etc. It's the bike hauler. I've looked after it, and it's on 135k now and has been trouble free - just usual maintenance which I do most of it ! Takes 4 big trail bikes, riders and kit round Wales. The boot is huge. Haven't got rid as it's been so reliable. No point.

The dust is as a result of Wales Rally at Tyr Prince Raceway about 3 years ago. Took weeks to get rid of it all.

My JDM turbo Legacy. For when you live your life a quarter mile at a time but also want to bring home some ikea wardrobes afterwards. LPG and randomly low tax and insurance make it almost as cheap to live with as my old Mondeo, though the boot isn't quite as epic.

Mr Subaru claims 260bhp for these, about the same as the STi of the time- this one made 245 on the dyno, which is alright for completely standard and 16 years old. It's getting a slightly bigger turbo and I just recently put a 3 inch system and HKS sports cat on it, which'll be enough to take it up 300-ish, which unfortunately is all this particular EJ20 is good for so any more will need some heroics/big spends (combination of fairly high compression and a pretty weak crank and rods). Being a pretty recent import it's in ridiculously good nick for its age (I'd almost forgotten what it's like to work on a car without having to fight every bolt) It has some Whiteline handley bits and Cusco coilovers all round, and a budget monoblock brake upgrade off of a Lexus 430. And I like it. Only real black mark is that it's an auto- the 5EAT box isn't terrible but the centre diff can't cope with the power, already blew one up by being a boy racer 🙁

There's another one on the drive, a complete shed of a UK Spec B 3 litre. Bought it to donate its 6 speed manual to this one but that project's been a bit forever delayed.

Loads of toys, lane assist, radar cruise, expensive stereo, 55mpg on the motorway - bought to do hours on the motorway going to places all over the UK, which it did last year with ease.

Ford Ranger. Had it since 2013 85k so far. Really like it. Don’t want a van for day to day, could drive the Vito from work but Ranger is much nicer. Wife has 2011 Insignia est. Dull as ditchwater. Keeping Ranger until I can buy a Rivian in UK

Missus has an FN2 Civic, a proper 5 door with the cyclist friendly rear seats, and it's Red which makes it the best. It's just clicked over 200,000 but from the state of the posh 17" wheels and the peeling lacquer, you'd think it had done 500,000.

Mine is a Iveco camper/bike van/horse box tug that likes to eat roll bar bushes

This thread has changed my whole view of stw, from reading lots it seemed it was full of poor eco friendly cyclists that didn’t like change or waste, reality is it’s full of middle class consumers pretending to be the former, awesome 🤣🤣

I'll be honest, I didn't think there was much love on STW for anyone who dared to have an interest in cars. That's another STW myth busted.

You must be new here 😉

There is always one car thread on the first page, normally more.

This place is basically Remainer Pistonheads most of the time.

Oh I'd seen (and contributed to) the odd car thread but generally not what I expect from STW. Actually, I'm talking pish - you can expect anything and everything on STW.

Still, I'm somewhat relieved I'm not the only one here with a stupid, anti-social car 🙂

Snap! A red 8v with a tweaked TSR motor and half decent suspension. Still really good fun to drive and practical with it. Oh, and a Corrado VR6 Storm, one of the blue ones, for sunny days and nice noises.

Golf GTE, good for going to the shops I EV mode and burning dinosaurs in GTE mode.
Also bought a transit connect for bike duties but has stood still to the point the battery went flat, roll on the days when I can escape to the peak.

I miss my alfa 159 brilliantly comfortable, a just a all round nice car. Went through suspension arms quicker than tyres though.

Been a bit of a rethink and a cull during the lockdown 🙁 Wife's Maxda MX-5 RF and my old Range Rover now both gone. Kept the Subaru Forester as it covers our dog/bike/moving stuff about needs pretty well.
