Well, this went a different direction than expected.

I was thinking, in the wake of the aircraft carrier thread, there might be interest in the planes we fly.

IANAFP, but I think the Typhoon is beautiful and the F35 butt ugly. Which is about the only criterion I know on which to purchase fighters.

TBF the US make some awesome aircraft but most are butt-ugly. With the exception of these 2:

Well the 10year old version of me would pick the typhoon. But that's only because I remember my fighter planes book and my favourite back then was the Saab Viggen. The typhoon has a passing resemblance to the viggen in that it is also a delta.

This:

As a child >9 , I lived opposite a scrapyard which had a Lightning cockpit and fuselage section. Owner was ok with us climbing in, taking off and saving the world.

This one, please.

I used to know someone who had one. As far as I recall it was no longer required and it was just a case of take it off our hands please. It was back in the 70's when it was all rather different. He had some other plane he acquired as well though I can't recall what that was. He also had an impressive collection of WWII parts he'd dug up as well. I was most impressed by the Spitfire gun sight he had. My dad told me a few years later he'd also shown him a .5 Browning he had stashed at the back of a barn.

But I'd really like a Saab Gripen and to use the M62 as my runway

Aesthetically I'm not a huge fan of the F-35 (odd proportions) or the Typhoon (mainly the low wing and the air intake I think). On that basis my favourite RAF fighter from my lifetime may be the Jaguar:

[img] [/img]

Otherwise, PJM1974 made the most relevant point:

Depends what you want to do with them?

For out and out speed the Typhoon wins and it'd probably also win for air superiority. For air to ground it's closer and would go in the Lightning II's favour if there's an appreciable SAM threat or similar.

The F-35 should be more future proof, but will still no doubt have plenty of teething problems to iron out. And if you need STOVL (or any sort of carrier capability) then the Typhoon is out of the running immediately.

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

ChrisL - I agree RE Jaguar, fabulous thing.

However, after seeing a French(?) one make an emergency landing in the field behind my house, when I was about 15 years old, a Harrier will remain cooler than a penguins pocket.

Top one is in service and doing good stuff. Bottom one is still ironing our the wrinkles. I also designed one of the bits in the top one.

Now - Typhoon.

5 years time - probably F35 but it would cause me great mental anguish.

YF-23 Black Widow(if it wasn't a gate guardian). Supposedly faster and stealthier than the Raptor but lost out due to some clever marketing and politics by the F-22 manufacturer.

Su-35 for me.

SR71 - fastest is fastest
Harrier - VTOL FTW
'Phoon - spangly modern G-mentalist

The F35 makes the typhoon look old, design wise. Such is the nature of fighter aircraft life cycles.

id take the one that has done the most missions with the highest kill count. people talking about looks!! if some anti aircraft gun was shooting at you why would you care what the thing looked like. you'd be looking the one that can get your ass outta there the fastest and evasive.

One of these. But only because there are bits of one to be found in a bog not far from here. Rumour has it there may even be some unaccounted for depleted uranium shells up there too. Not fast, not pretty, but decidedly efficient in what it was designed to do.[img] [/img]

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm hot russian ladies.

That plane is a) Ukrainian, and b) very, very similar to an F-15.

EDIT: Okay, with respect to point 'b', not as much as I thought.

F-15:

Sukhoi
sukhoi.org/eng
The JSC Sukhoi Company is a major Russian aircraft manufacturer, headquartered in Begovoy District, Northern Administrative Okrug, Moscow, and designs both civilian and military aircraft. It was founded by Pavel Sukhoi in 1939 as the Sukhoi Design Bureau. The Russian government merged Sukhoi with Mikoyan, Ilyushin, Irkut, Tupolev, and Yakovlev as a new company named United Aircraft Corporation.

Maybe not so much on point a either 😉
