In the UK we have some of the most vibrant and possibly edgy subcultures in the world. I guess it could be argued that most of these subcultural activists belong to a more liberal and leftie positioning on the political spectrum.

After all the shoot em, hang em and flog em ... or put em in the army brigade have articulated their political solutions to this broken society; I tried to imagine what a society would look like if it was indeed run by these authoritarian right wing types in relation to subculture.

What subcultures would you expect to find in a authoritarian right wing society. This is just for fun, perhaps a pointless exercise.

I was already wondering what the hell has happened to youth culture, where are the songs with the messages and political commentary, when the riots were kicking off in the early 80'sthere were bands like the specials singing about their experiences as young men at the time, crossing over from subculture into mainstream charts.

That all seems to have been swallowed up by commercialism, I don't think its a political change, the record industry no longer courts talent as much as it does easy bland success.

Surely it's rap/hip hop MSP but it's (music in general) too commercialised now so that doom and gloom merchants tend not to get through to airplay. I'm sure they're there though.

As for sub cultures, by definition they'd exist in any society (even in communist cultures) but they may be less visible in a less tolerant society.

Culture now is commercialism and celebrityism. (I made up the last word but you know what I mean)

We have seen the end of things like culture and class, its been replaced by consumerisum fueled by cheap and sometimes free credit.

Topped off with the promotion of a culture of moral absolutism centered around spurious and selective concepts of 'fairness'. This culture, and the accompanying a sence of individual and collective entitlement is one of the root causes of the mess the economy is in.

There will always be class divides. It's funny how the term entitlement used to be used at one end of the spectrum and os now being used at the other end.

Cher loyd gets to number 1 with Swagger Jagger and it results in folks burning down her labels (Sony) distribution centre.

I can see a definite and balanced reason why that had to be done 🙂

When my wife was at Uni in the late 80s there was a definite boom going on,primal scream/Stone Roses plus all your crusty stuff, and people were far more switched on,into their sounds etc. I went in 2001, the most played song on the union jukebox? Steps, tragedy. I weep for the youth of today.

There may be subculture, but none of it seems to break through into the mainstream, it isn't seen as the breeding grounds of talent it once was.

Maybe there will be a backlash against the faux moralising we have seen over the past few days, and new artists, comedians and satirists will find a political edge to their work.

Yeah but have you seen the bikes in his shed, he must have spent too much on tools and not had enough left over for the more important things.

true, chances are i'd do something typically poor and draw a moustache on the queen.

anyway, must dash! the airlfow heating system in my rented property has a 'catastrophic failure' according to the inspector who came today so no hot water until the landlord decides if its worth investing in allowing us to wash once a month again.
