currently on a friends car insurance, with a provisional license. My test is this week, and she has just flown off to antigua... I was hoping to pick her up from the airport upon her return... I presume i need to inform the insurance when i am no longer a learner, but can i do this or does the main driver have to do this? If i drive without informing them i'll be breaking the law? Will the premium go up or down if i pass my test? Male, 23 years old... Sorry for crap formatting of the text, am using phone... Thanks 🙂

PRemium is on the highest rated driver.

As a learner, and therefore logically accompanies by the policyholder, the premium will be quite low, you will not be the main user of the vehicle.

As soon as you pass the test, you revert to being an inexperienced driver with a full licence, who will no longer be accompanied by an experienced motorist. The premium will rocket, and as its a material change to the policy, the insurers need to be told immediately.

I got caught out 25 years ago crashing a car just after I passed my test. It was even my car, but having informed the insurers, the car was crashed before the insurers were aware. They ammended the policy from comp to tpf&t arduing they'd not have covered the risk of a new driver and declined to pay out.

Premium didn't go up for me a couple of years ago, nor my bro a few months ago. Did cost more on renewal though.

Mine never went up when I passed 2 or 3 years ago, they just sent some revised policy documents out. May depend on the insurer?

Premiums quite often go up once you pass .As you are a bigger risk on your own

I'd just get temporary insurance coverage, used to be called a cover note - plenty of online merchants happy to take your money.

If the car is not registered in your name it might be an issue but I doubt it as I assume you will be driving with permission.

Hope you pass!

You cant insure a car twice or if its not yours so the last suggestion is not possible.

Why doesn't your friend just ring up and get a quote for your change? They have phones in Antigua.

the reason she is going to antigua is to get away from the considerable stresses back in the uk, don't think she'll really want to be calling up insurance people! She'll also be living on a boat, with no phone while she is there 😉

The premium will go up, my daughters did last month. You are now able to drive unsupervised, greater risk.

What amazes me is that you have been able to change another persons insurance policy with just a phone call 😯 You are not the policyholder and the car isn't yours........ huh?
Can you phone them back and put me on the policy as well?

Edit: Just noticed that you haven't changed the policy yet - so I shall revise my reply to state that I would be amazed if you were able to change the policy as you're not the policyholder.

Good luck btw.
