Hi,
V Jr is getting an Xbox One for Xmas, I've been advised to do all the updates before the big day to avoid the download mayhem.
I just plugged it in and did the main system update, but it also came with some games (downloads, not discs) which I'd like to install and update. My question is...
If I install them while logged in as me, do they become my games? In other words, when V Jr logs in on Xmas day, will they be able to play them under their account???
I guess I'm asking, are they tied to the account or the machine?
Cheers,
V
The usual setup is for one account on the box to get gold, others can then use their own accounts (non-gold) to access online servers..Games can be shared across accounts
I've been "testing" our kids present. All games on the xbox are available within the age range you set. So Battlefield 1 they won't be able to play as they are set as 7 years and below. Although you can give permission to override this. You do have to set them up with an account, so creating them an email address. You can also share the xbox live membership, there is some setting where you change it to home box.
When you redeem the game on your account, it becomes tied to your gamercard. Other accounts can use games that are installed on that xbox. They can't use them on a different xbox though. If you moved your account to a different xbox, the other accounts would no longer be able to play the games on the original xbox.
Basically you are fine adding them to your account, as long as you plan on keeping only one xbox and the kids aren't moving out any time soon!
Thanks for the advice.
I think I'll set V Jr a user account and add the games to that, presumably the user ID and email address can be edited once xmas arrives.
Although... Would that leave my credit card attached to the other account, meaning V Jr could [s]sneakily[/s] accidentally buy stuff?

Not quite, if you logged into another box, it'd work on both. It's only if you change your "Home" console that the other one stops working. A couple of my friends have each others' consoles as Home, so they can play each others' games as well as their own.

Depending on age, I'd be tempted to set it up with your own as the primary account. Then add the anklebiter as a second account. You can then apply parental settings and the like (there's some sort of family member account I think, I've never needed to use it).
With ours all the admin level stuff can only be done on my account. Kids (8 and 10) have more locked down kids accounts as part of the Family setup with Outlook.com email accounts that they don't even know exist e.g. kidname.myusername@outlook.com. I use these email accounts purely for the purposes of creating an xbox account. I'm the only one who can buy stuff and we don't have any games that involve a pagga but that'll change at some point.
To log in on the Xbox they just select their icon/gamertag with no password, whereas I have a pincode for my account, so easy when it comes to just playing games (until they realise they can wipe out each other's game progress/earnings).
EDIT - this can all be setup on xbox.com from a proper computer so you don't have to type it all in on the xbox itself.
You're all ace 🙂
I've now set up a separate account for V Jr and set them up as a "Child" in the "Family" and me as an "Adult" (with all the power that that entails).
Looks like I can gift money to mini-V's account, so I can do that and buy the games I was planning to get for them that way 🙂
Thanks again, looks like I'm on the way to joining the 21st century...
**mutters about the PS1 not being this complex**
Forza Horizon 3. Thank me later.
Forza Horizon 3 is fantastic ... and I will also have a code for it to sell when my new Xbox arrives if you're interested!

No Hot Wheels? Cheapskate.
Games Pass is also a good plan, yes it's money on top of Gold but you get a decent library of games you can install and play as you please including 360 titles. Re-Core is a good one, same team as Metroid and the newest version is actually complete. Also, Hexic 2. Some nice indy games available too, Hue is a good platformer.
Depending on your stance on shooters Destiny 2 may be worth looking at. There is very little to justify the 16 rating as far as I can see, voice comms are by active participation only (still not figured out how to join team chat for Crucible matches) and there is no griefing or harassment. Obviously you should playtest it first to come to an informed decision, I'd recommend going either Warlock or Hunter. Then try the other one. And then Titan because you have already got two thirds of the way there.
Reading with interest.
I want to set up an account for my 8yo, but can't work out how to do that without providing him with an email account.
Any tips?
Provide him with an email account.
You don't actually have to -use- it. See Scuttler's post.
Right, done.
Anyone know how his game data can be moved from my account to his (new) account?
He's having to start all his games again... whoops.
