Young Surfer has saved enough "paper round" money to buy a 360 and as much as I want him out running/walking/cycling/playing in the great outdoors I cant refuse so I have relented.

We went to get one last night and the guy in Game was really pushing the PS3 and running down the 360 (The PS3 is circa £130 more in a similar bundle)

I am sure this has been done before so apologies but is the 360 as good for gaming (young surfer is only 11 so this limits the choice of games to non violent ones)

Thanks

Xbox, has a better choice of games, and games are cheaper than PS3, controllers are nicer than PS3.

Apparently the Xbox is outselling the sony at the moment too.

i have a wii a 360 and a ps3(i know get a life ha) and if i had to keep one it would be the 360
for me the ps3 is lacking in the online department and it is constantly being updated(the firmware)
the pro`s of the ps3 is the online is free and it does have a bluray player built in
but as i said its the 360 for me but if your little one wont be going online then there isnt really that much to choose, both are great systems

I have a 360 for me and my son, way more games but prob not as good graphics as the ps3 but i would think only the nerdiest gamers notice this. If you want want him to stay active make it a wii. 360's do have well documented reliability issues tho the more recent models with HDMI connections are more reliable apparently.

Hey surfer, how's it going?

Haven't played much on the PS3 but from what I have seen, the PS3's graphics are superior to the 360's....better frame rates so smoother, more lifelike. Nearly all the games come out for both these days (apart from, say, the 360 signature titles like Project Gotham, Halo and some others).

I would have plumped for the PS3 but having recently resurrected my 360, I see that the XBox Live experience is really good now...and very young-lad friendly if you know what I mean. Also, Facebook's coming to the 360 and if you haven't seen it, check out some video about the next big thing for the 360: Project Natal. Although, reading about it, there are wildly varying estimates about the timescales and achievability of the technology.

The 360 is supposed to be around till 2015 too. Now, I have no idea how good the PS3 live experience is. But Xbox Live is bloody good these days.

And little surfer's 11???? Shouldn't he be playing Grand Theft Auto by now?

Mainly its the accessories and Hard drive size is different, and the colour, or it used to be.

Interesting you say that the guy in Game was telling me the 360 platform is being replaced in about 2 years!

just the hard drive size and the hdmi connection but if he is only going to use a standard tv i would go for the premium
i think you should not be so tight and buy him a 360 and a ps3 its not like theres a recession on! 😉

I'm sure I'd heard from E3 (I swear I don't look at video game sites, honestly!!!!) that Microsoft announced a definite 10 year lifespan for the 360...let me see if I can dig the story out (I'll have to check with a geek site somewhere...)

EDIT:10 Year Lifespan

Also, the stuff I watched on the 360 itself about Natal (even mrs deadly thought it was cool) said that it would be available for the 360.

The difference isn't even that big. The premium has HDMI as well (at least mine does) so it's down to the size of the hard drive and the case colour. The only thing that annoyed me was the fact that the wifi adaptor was extra.

Would that be the guy in Game who was trying to sell you a more expensive alternative which they have stacks of as they aren't selling as well as the cheaper Xbox 360?

I own both a PS3 and an Xbox 360. I use my PC most for gaming, then my Xbox 360 and am thinking of selling my PS3 as I rarely use it now days other than to watch Blu Ray films.

Also facebook on the 360???

I know, but this isn't a rumour...it's actually on the "Latest Features" section of the Xbox Live bit on the console itself.

Yep my thoughts exactly. You can't believe a word they say anyway...they're told from week to week what stuff to push and what not to.

Also, make sure you go for the wireless controllers...they're really good...and double up as (kinda) neat little remote controllers for playing DVDs. And get the rechargeable battery packs and the little plug in charger stand.

If you use a Mac, you can even browse your movie files from the XBox now and play them wirelessly on your TV.

Mine was the bascic arcade version and that has HDMI connectivity! You have to buy the cable separately tho!

Think the basic Core system has a DVI connection not HDMI, similar but not quite as good

I'd look at what is round the corner on the XBOX myself. Absolute light years ahead of anything Sony have mentioned.

Thats an excellent offer thanks however he is giddy with anticipation that we collect tonight and 11 year olds arent good on "deferred gratification" ! Also the HD may actually be useful but thanks again.

Thats the one! but he was underestimating the the power of STW!! I work with geeky types but he made me nervous!

The online stuff looks good but unless I fork out on the wireless adapter I will need to find an access point. Cat5 is not an option where it will be used.

I’d say 360 every time, unless you want a BluRay player, or particularly want a game that’s a PS3 exclusive. Despite Sony pushing the PS3 as being a more powerful machine, the paper specs don’t really translate to actual performance, and the majority of multi-platform games run better on the 360 – PS3 versions tend to have lower framerates, less detailed textures, more frequent/noticeable screen tear, etc. You can get an idea of how multi-platform titles perform on each console by reading Eurogamer’s ‘Face-Off’ articles: http://www.eurogamer.net/archive.php?type=face-off&sort=&platform=digitalfoundry&author=175

The 360 also has a wider library of games, generally has more support from the developers, and a very good online service (Xbox Live). It also has easy to set up parental control settings, where you can prevent the console from playing games that are over a specified age rating. 😉

The Playstation has a better controller though, the d-pad on the 360 is absolutely rubbish for playing Street Fighter on. 🙁

Worth it though if you do...it was the only thing that worked properly for me.

Microsoft take no resposibiity for the xbox after the warranty for the ring of death.
cost £70 ago to fix, no blu ray, generally a pile of poo.....
Good luck. Spend the money on beer.

Sorry to be so negative!

Mleh!!

Microsoft take no resposibiity for the xbox after the warranty for the ring of death.

I had my only ring of death about two years after I bought it...they asked no questions and did it for free.

MD

Not clear how old this is and havent read it in depth yet but looks like an improvement to their warranty.

Red ring of death is covered by the three year warranty, but the 360s since last year are a lot more reliable due to the new Jasper chipset and an improved heatsink.

Does kind of suck that the early adopters got stuck with an unreliable design, but unfortunately it seems to be the norm for disc based consoles - I remember how ropey the first gen of PS2s were. :/

Bring back the Megadrive!

I'm not much of a gamer but think the 360 is excellent. By far the best thing is that you can copy games to the hard drive and play them off that. No fannying around with discs and no whirring drive to listen to

To think that this option came from a free update is pretty good going

True, but you still actually have to put the disk into the machine. But, yes, much quieter.

360's are the dogs danglies. Yes the old ones were of somewhat shoddy build quality, but they all come with 3 year waranties anyway...I have 2 360's in the house - the oldest was one the first batch and has had the RROD twice, both dealt with in less than a week. The second, now about 12 months old, has been faultless.
My son wanted a Wii last chrimbo, and its now for sale in the Classifieds as he only ever plays the 360.

Think the basic Core system has a DVI connection not HDMI, similar but not quite as good

ALL new 360s have HDMI and have done for probably a year or more.

No 360 has DVI (which is literally HDMI minus sound and through a different connector)
