If you knew someone in an industry you used to work in, and that person had a really, really bad reputation (Mix of financial dodginess, leaving debts, theft and some highly questionable views on personal relationships) and you were to find out that a company you know well, and respect, with some people you are still in touch with, has started using that individual in their promotional material........

What would STW do? (WWSTWD, geddit?)

PS - No names, no pack drill.

If I cared about the reputation of the company and the people I knew, I'd have a quiet, off the record chat with them, leaving them to do their own research and make their own decisions afterwards.

Is there much you can do without risking libel/slander etc etc?

Does any of this negative stuff come up on google? If so, anonymous email to the company recommending that they do so...

This is pretty good advice.

EDIT: Being sure to do so in a non-judgmental tone.

I've worked with someone who in the past has shown questionable morals to the point of bullying and lies and I know people who now work with this individual.
I decided that anything I said could reflect badly on me as some kind of machiavellian political character and kept my mouth shut.
It depends on how well you know this company tbh...

Alas no. It is well known by some. No criminal action was taken, as in the two cases I know of, the companies simply got rid of him as quickly as possible to avoid further reputational damage. So, well known, but clearly not by the new "employer" here. Hence the problem, as there's an element of 'rumour' to it, I'm a little wary.

The new "employer" has recently been sold to a new owner, and as such my connections within it are gradually lessening, especially in the upper echelons.

given so few know about it what sort of reputational damage are the company using him risking? Would any of their customers/potential customers know (and they could tell if they do)?

I'd stay clear.

Sounds like a risk to you to get involved.

What if this person has already had a chat or they have straightened their life out?

Should we bin everyone in life by judging them on past performance and not what they might go on to achieve?

Is he in a position of either trust or responsibility ? If the answers yes to Either, then I'd have a quiet word over a glass of Champers with someone you know Very Well in that company.
If the answers No, then no back off and leave them to it, sure they've done their research anyways.

Don't forget, to be taken on these days all sorts of checks are done from FinCrime/Credit/Scottish Disclosure and others to name a few, if anything related (to what you say ^^) it would have been highlighted there and as such discussed at on boarding.

This person may have changed their ways and really, sorry, it's not really any of your business.

Tread carefully, thats what I'd do.

A quiet word is the answer.
Even if the person has turned over a new leaf, the new employer can just keep a more careful eye on them until they are shown to be clean.
A snitch in time, saves mine.

You never know, they may have been knowingly employed for a reason. Players can get things done that decent people can't or won't.

You can bet that plenty of City employers know which of their staff are psychopaths who'll knowingly break the law to pull off deals...
