I know its proably trying to fix something thats not broken but other forums like invisions etc do private mailing - I was thinking that this would be good and convinient for STW forum posters - Anyone else? If so We sould ask STW to include this poss?

Just go to the user profile and check out their email address? And if someone cares enough, they can even make their name a mailto: clicky (like mine)

A web poll? Do you think this is some sort of democracy?

i'd say yes, i know there's e-mail address' PM's keep threads on-topic as any sidetracking can be sent straight to the poster rather than posting on the thread.

druidh - you do not speak for all the STW members - the main reason I think that most people do not put their emails up is probably due to spammers even if you do dot and at etc! This way peoples email would be protected - Its just a thought. Don't have [s]a baby[/s]kittens 😉

one day there will be. Remember that site upgrade just the other night? Well, that's the seed that will see this and other features implemented.

Don't hold your breath just yet, but we'll let you know when you can start holding your breath.

That email address only gets 1 or 2 Junk Emails every day, and my filters remove even those.

I presume your "web poll" will only have one option?

Ditto what finbar said. PMs are for the generic forum formats that most other forums operate on.

If people want to be contacted they can put their email address in their profile. I'de much rather do dealings through a forum by email than PM.

Too late, already turned blue.

On the subject on forum upgrades.......

Any chance of a more than just two fourms threads, don't want loads, maybe just, a general, workshop, rides / routes, buying stuff, plus off topic ?

Any chance of something that lets you see new posts since you last logged on.

I know they're probably a big ask but I've spent a lot of time over on BikeRadar and must admit I like the forum structure there, unfortunately the quality of posts seems to have dropped recently so I'm here more often now.

PS I also like post counts, but then I am a sad number crunching git, I'll get my coat before someone starts banging on about fanboys or something.

No no no please no, it was bad enough when they split the forum in two!

I did say I was in the process of defecting, the trolls seem to have taken up residence over there. Forum structure is a nice to have, quality post content is a must 8) .

That's the best thing about this site, no categories and sub categories to wade through. Split forums are a pain to navigate, more work for mods who have to move threads around and more difficult to find things.

Although certain individuals on here even have trouble with 2 forums - moaning that road bike stuff shouldn't be in the bike forum or whatever...

BIKE: anything about bikes, any bikes. Yes, even road bikes
CHAT: everything else.

Nice clean layout, easy. 🙂

absolutely agree - multiple forum categories only really works in forums that are absolutely massive. the simple layout is what makes STW work (oh, and the banter obviously)
but e-mail notifications would be nice

Just to throw my comment in, over the last couple of days I've been on briskoda, a Skoda owners forum, trying to track down some replacement alloys for my Octi. They have a facility for private mail that works well enough, but obviously you have to access the 'site to get it. I asked a contact to use my mail addy which enabled me to reply to him while sat on the beach at Brean today where I didn't have a strong enough signal to allow me to use the website on my phone. I can see a use, but I don't have strong feelings one way or another. As far as layout changes go, please, don't alter it from the current bike/chat/classified setup. It works, it ain't broke, don't fix it. One little mod, though. I've noticed on other sites when you click on the italic/quote/bold/whatever modifier tabs at top they place both open and close modifiers into the text stream with the cursor flashing between, which is much neater than having to click the tab twice. If that mod can be implemented that would be cool. It just makes it a lot easier when posting from a small screen like a phone, which is how I usually do it.

CountZero: try it the other way around: write your text select the bit you want italic and then press the button. Works well.

GrahamS, thanks for that, never occured to me. I'll give it a try. The system used by briskoda is quick and neat, tho', so it would be nice to see it implemented if poss. Cheers. 😛

I remember an incident on the previous forum where someone recieved a very intimidating email, detailing how the recipient would get a visit from the senders mates ( yeah, real tough guy )to settle an argument they were having online. The email was then posted on the forum. Luckily, the sender of that email has recently been removed in a high profile banning, but there are I'm sure, other people out there who will use the facility to send personal abuse and/or threats.

I'd like to think that it might be something that we can choose to add to our profile rather than be mandatory.

Slight hijack if we're discussing changes to forum but can't hyperlinks in posts be underlined or a more obvious colour difference? Its not always obvious where the hyperlink is so I'm scanning text with my mouse icon waiting for the underline to appear.

I would say that PM's are likely to be an option i.e. allow or deny - This means you can add it to your profile and then decide without making it exposed to everyone! That was my intention!
