Pick up a copy of Echos by Nick Bullock - read it, its quite a frank insight into the prison service as well as climbing.

My partners dad was a prison officer for 30 years. He doesn't talk about it much, tends to try to talk about anything else. When he does, it's not something I'd take on lightly.

Thread with lots of views on it really not something I'd fancy doing but works work, though a friends m8 has worked as a PE (apply fancier title if you want) instructor in one for many years without issue

Several threads on here in the past, several officers are regulars.

More then most public sector jobs, it's one we all think is a crucial job but we wouldn't want to do it.

esselgruntfuttock is one. I'd have thought prison would be the worst place to work with a name like that, but he must be thicker skinned than me.

Nearby landlord retired after a heart attack now runs my local pub.
He doesn't talk about it, I imagine he's seen some rough shit.

hi im currently considering a change of career and [s]have looked into applying for a job as a prison officer. [/s] am desperate to get out of the prison service. FTFY.

You'll be starting on 19K & ending up on about 23K as an officer. Well if you want to roll around on the floor with horrible people spiced out of their brains, unable get leave, sort out prisoners problems often caused by other staff, Jesus the list is endless. I'm on top whack as a pre 'fair & sustainable' officer & I've just applied to be a janitor (19K) in a food factory!
Email in profile if you like.

though a friends m8 has worked as a PE (apply fancier title if you want) instructor in one for many years without issue

& he won't have any issues as long as he's a PEI. The last thing prisoners want is to lose their gym sessions.

esselgruntfuttock is one. I'd have thought prison would be the worst place to work with a name like that,

You must be an ape if you think that's my name at work! 😉

My brother in law has just got out on ill health retirement, he got the shit kicked out of him in Armley. He says with all the cut backs things are going to get worse and he would not recommend anyone go into that job.

Just read that on

Who's going to staff it then? Heard through the grapevine that YOI Brinsford had recruited 20 new staff lately, after a week they had 5 left.
(may or may not be totally true but it could be close)

things are going to get worse and he would not recommend anyone go into that job.

+ another.
It's still the service that the vast majority don't hear about in the press & therefore could'nt give a shit about.

The biggest in the country from whats been released, its been built on an old tyre factory site, miles from the town centre, no train station nearby and limited bus service.

My son in law to be works for G4S in a YOI, it's shite, poorly run, Inappropriately staffed, can't get leave, etc etc etc......wouldn't be my choice of occupation!

At least she left the job first!
Stuff still happens though, we read about it now & again, unfortunately some staff can't help themselves, theyr'e as bad as the cons.

The job was ok up until a couple of years ago, but with the cutbacks on staff it's now a very dangerous place to be & like I said, Joe Public hears very very little about everyday events.
