I go hillwalking two or three times a year with a bunch of mates. The first time I went with them, about 25 years ago I was still in the army. One of the group is an army mate, through whom I met the others. They include a teacher, IT wonks, a BT engineer, a sales exec. etc. etc.
After a meet up and night on the piss, I was told we'd be up for breakfast at 7:30 and off up the hill at 8:30. I suppose I was still a bit institutionalised and not inducted into the ways of the idle civvy. I took this literally.
At 07:25 I was stood in the bunkhouse (Pete's Eats in Llanberis), daysack on my back, fully gaitered and goretexed up, and keen as mustard for a morning scramble up Crib Goch. All around me lay comatose, farting, snoring bodies and a kit explosion all over the floor. My own kit was immaculately stowed, as if for a locker inspection or in case I had to bug out at 03:00! 😀
When they eventually deigned to rise, people spent yonks lacing boots, filling drinking bladders, looking for lost kit, arguing about the route, smoking and drinking coffee to induce a shit and breakfasting in an extremely leisurely manner. The faffing was epic, absolutely off the scale. I was genuinely horrified.
I think we eventually left around 10:30. I was absolutely raging but because I was new to the group, I bit my lip. They have all since become really good mates and I have now accepted that "this is the way" on these weekends. I just roll with it now. In fact the civvy tosspots have infected me with their slovenly idleness and I'm now often one of the biggest offenders. Bastards.
I'm still very punctual otherwise!

🤣 i like this hits so many truths. I try this with my kids -including my rage over dangling buckles and zips not done up, and clothes not in freezer bags etc -thankfully my daughter is now fully indoctrined, my son - lost cause.

Like anyone a) at the hotel or b) having anything to do with the rail network would give the slightest of ****s whether you've boarded a train or not. Hell, it's in the hotel's best interest, if you miss the last train then you'll need somewhere to stay the night.

This is correct. If he'd been stuck in a queue in the garage, I'd have been far more sanguine about it.
Re. The Waverley clock thing, I noticed the same about the Station Tap clock in Chester the other week. I'll ask if that's purposeful next time I'm there. (It's an excellent bar by the way and we'll worth popping on should you find yourself waylayed at Chester.)

Due to its location right next to Waverley Station, the hotel’s iconic clock was set three minutes fast so that passing travellers wouldn’t miss their trains, and it’s been that way ever since.
The only exception comes on Hogmanay for the city’s New Year celebrations.

I would much rather be early for something and spend 10 minutes waiting than running around late and stressing.
I can sit in an airport for 2hrs quite happily.
This is me. If I’m picking my mate up for a gig or a drink, then I’ll be a bit early, especially for gigs, because traffic. Otherwise, I’ll give an ‘about’ time, just for a little flexibility, like the road being closed due to an accident, a house on fire, or a large hole appearing in the road*, all of which have happened, and all when I was going to meet a particular friend for a drink!
*A water main had burst, washing the ground out from underneath and caused a sinkhole! 🤷🏼♂️
Also, I have an entire library on my phone, as well as lots of music, so I’m never bored when having to wait around.
we have a lot of meetings in work and introduced a biscuit rule
.if youre late you have to bring biscuits to the next meeting , improves punctuality and you still get biscuits at a meeting now and again
