Good to see a few others having to take all the tries up, make me feel a little bit better anyway.
Don’t think it’s getting harder or more obscure. The list the who created it was about 2500 words long. Do you know 2500 5 letter words?
Had forgotten the original designer had gone so far ahead with the word list. For some reason I thought they chose each daily word a few days beforehand.
I'd assumed that it's randomly generated and runs itself.

The original programmer made it for his wife. AFAIK, he found a list of 5-letter words and asked his wife to mark all the words she knew. That was around 2 300 words, so the list will be exhausted in about six years. Both lists were coded into the webpage he made. The word of the day is just selected consecutively from the list of words his wife knew (which he must have shuffled because it's not alphabetical), the complete list is used to determine whether a word is a real word or not. Apparently, if you go through the code of his webpage, the complete list of answers was coded in there so cheating is pretty trivial if you're into that.
Whether the NY Times stuck with his list, has randomized it, or has developed an algorithm to select trickier words, I don't know.
