Putting the feelers out. I know nothing re plumbing but was asked by a friend if it's possible to have a solid fuel range with a back-burner (connected to water mains) to provide rads or under-floor heating yet *without* a water-tank?

Wont work straight off the mains, youd need a vented (or unvented but not for DIY) circuit around the boiler and the rads/UFH. Also worth having a load charger on the heating circuit.

the back boiler has to be sealed [ open or closed] and not inked to the mains - you can use say an immersion tank and circulate from there or just use a header tanks and pump the water round the [ system - this has to be closed and I used an open system.
For underfloor you will need a pump as I would be surprised if open gravity fed works for that [ though you could do gravity fed to the tank and pump from there - though this would take ages to heat up.
I assume that Stoner has linked to some kind of accumulator or thermal store.
thermal store would be the easiest as you could have a hot water coil in it and also add other fuel sources should you want.
Remember when siting a thermal store that it will make that area very warm and in well insulated houses it can be a problem as it needs to be hot all year round.
