got a chip on the windscreen, autoglass quote is £139 to repair. Theres a £25 quid excess on my insurance for windscreen repairs, but does it affect premiums much if i claim?

Supposedly not - I guess they figure it's cheaper to pay the repair if it incentives people to fix it before it becomes a full screen replacement.

I'd ask though, as I'm sure you know from your question, it's hardly worth saving £114 if your premiums go up £150.

You sure it's not just xs for replacement? Many insurers pay for repairs completely. It doesn't usually affect policy premiums. I've had both chip repair and a few years later a broken screen replacement without affecting premium, or not so I noticed.

£25 seems kind of low for the excess for that though - maybe it's a new thing? I agree though - a screen claim should have no effect on premiums, it certainly isn't registered as a claim (or wasn't when I last claimed for glass replacement many years ago).

Pretty sure windscreen replacement doesn't affect no claims discount.

Depends on the company.

Ive also seen it counted as a claim when moving between companies .....

It varys on a company to company basis.

Get a second opinion? Halfords do it, or National Windscreens?

Supposedly a chip smaller than a 2p coin can be repaired without needing full glass replacement. I've never had it done, but £140 sounds high to me.

halfords quote 25 quid for repair.

autoglass keep prices high so you go through your insurance and they can charge even more.

they were about double the cost of what i ended up paying for a whole screen last time i needed one fitting.

Check your policy, I used a mobile repair guy, can't remember the company but one of the mainstream ones.

Did it through insurance, but no excess and didn't affect my policy, it was essentially free to me.

TR - do all Halfords offer this? Tried searching their website but none are coming up as specifically offering it.

£139 for a repair seems a lot of money.

I got a new windscreen fitted in my Vivaro for £120

id have a ring round the local independent windscreen firms and get an idea of price of repair off them. Think the guy I got my windscreen off does a repair for £40.

If you can get the same, it's not worth saving £15 in case the insurance does go up.

I've always had chips done via insurance, or at least just go to AutoGlass and they sort it all out. Last one I recall they asked for £10 though which they said was the excess on my insurance. Never affected no claims.

Depends on the chip whether it needs repairing at all. Took it in once for a small scuff like chip and they said it wouldn't be worth doing and shouldn't cause it to crack. Had that chip there for 5 years and no problem.

IF there's not a huge cost difference, then it's worth bearing in mind that a fresh new windscreen and set of wipers is a lovely thing, well worth spending a few quid on.

Can you not DIY it?

I did mine a few years back and I was hard pushed to see where the chip was once it was done!
Bought the kit for it on ebay.

I've had 2 replacements, different insurance companies, no affect on no claims. One had an excess to pay, other didn't. I'd check with insurance company just to be sure.

bedmaker is right about a new windscreen being really nice for a weeks or two

If you know any local mechanics ask if they know anyone who can do it for you 😉 😉

Chances are it'll be the same guy your insurance will send round.
