I want to play Sim City 4 on a W10 PC. It only works on XP. The XP mode addition you used to be able to get free with W7 is not available with W10.

Happy with using Virtual box etc, but where does one get licenses for XP? Do you still need one? The PC was originally W7 before the upgrade.

Gog.com have it for approx £16 and they repackage their games to run on modern systems.

I've bought a few games again from them just to save myself the hassle of farting about with VMs

It's on Steam for a tenner - might do that actually. The limiting factor in the game was always CPU performance so if it runs on a quad core i7 it might let me build a much bigger city 🙂

Potentially skip the Virtualbox and run it in Windows Subsystem for Linux, which will run native linux binaries. Not sure on the graphical stuff though.

Never sure on Steam versions of old games. There's loads of old stuff but uncertain if they've actually tweaked them to run on later OS as the system requirements they show still just mention XP (for example).

It used to be that steam didn't bother fixing old games and just left you to it, the original UFO: Enemy Unknown being an example of this.

No idea if they've fixed that now, but GOG definitely do.
