My SO's laptop is not booting, i can get it to the login screen type her password and then it seems to hang? Ideas as to what may be the problem. and more importantly what the solution might be.

Second issue is how to get the data off if needs be before reinstalls or that sort of thing.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?

Don't know the answer to the first question but for the second when I was having SP1 trouble I managed to reinstall over the top of the original installation with no loss of data or other software. It seems to "repair" quite easily.

could be a number of issues... data off is normally easy... recovery console and a usb stick is prob the easiest if its being silly. I would start with simple checks... if it hangs in safe mode? if it hangs in bios? to diag is its hardware or software issues. Try going into windows setup, don't actually setup but see if it hangs. Then let us know, easier then! could be either from here.

it won't boot into safe mode, it hangs on crcdisk.sys, I can get the dos window so have been copying files that way.
