Running windows 8.1, installed a bunch of updates last night and now it won't boot normally and keeps going into safe mode.
Have tried repairing, nope.
Have tried system restore, not so far. Initially tried one from yesterday, no joy, currently restoring to one from last week.

Anyone got any pointers please?
(No mention of MACs please, as one button mice are just wrong!)

System restore would've been my first suggestion but it looks like you've tried that.

If it boots in safe mode, another option is to try and remove the updates through add/remove programs. Once the screen's opened you should be able to display updates and identify from the date when they were installed. It's a faff but might work?

Chkdsk would be my first port of call there.

my first port of call would be system restore from at least a week ago (which is what you are trying now)

Next i would go into update history to see if any are failing

Finally I would go with singletrackstinker's suggestion and remove the updates through add/remove programs. However if system restore worked i'm not sure you should see anything here

edit: oh of course and Cougar's suggestion of a disk check as if you have a failing disk everything gets borked. Some PCs also have utilities that do a complete hardware check including memory. I would also be doing the memory check as system restore usually fixes things

Do you get an option to 'Boot Normally'? Have you tried that?

Stand down, Im officially a dunce.
I'd forgotten that I'd been running an AV scan in safe mode recently. So when the PC boots up it goes straight into safe mode. Thus stopping the updates installing properly.
It was late last night and I was tired, I'd forgotten to turn off boot into safe mode. 😳
Early night for me tonight.
Thanks for all those who helped, you may now mock me.
