I see there's a lot of "free Windows download" sites. Has anybody used one successfully? I suppose there's a risk of importing nasties, so I'm a bit wary.

I have the floppy discs here, if you'd like me to copy them for you. Versions 3.1 and that new fangled Windows for Workgroups. I assume you have DOS already?

FFS, it's only £30 if you know someone with a uni email address, or £60 in the shops. Don't be so bloody tight.

I bet if you did download it and found a virus in it you'd still blame Microsoft. They got it right with Windows 7 - if you don't want to run Windows there are countless free alternatives such as Ubuntu.

Apart from the dubious legality, you'll probably have a regular faff bypassing the verification requirements to download patches and updates. To be honest I suspect you're not really up for it.

Yep, agree. if you have to ask then don't do it as you'll just be causing yourself grief in the long run.

Have been running 64-bit win7 since it went RTM (and 64-bit vista before that). No problems.

It was about 7 months old when I stuck it on and essentially was from fresh as it went on a new drive just as the old one broke.

windows 7 64bit works great. It just works. I have got it running on two older machines, one of them really old.

I just bought a whole new set up with windows seven and it worked great...until.......I installed Spybot!:-O

Then it kept locking up and that blue circle just kept spinning. Also ctrl alt delete and task manager popped up and you couldn't access its functions either. So uninstalled to see how it goes now.
Is anyone aware of compatability issues with win 7 and spybot?

Yes, and no.

"Normal" (i.e. 32-bit) programs run fine on 64-bit Windows, but have the normal 32-bit restrictions on how much memory they can access.

Specially compiled 64-bit programs get full access to memory and may also be faster (as they may use more efficient multi-word processor instructions).

(I've been using 64-bit Windows since 2005. Started with XP 64-bit, then Vista 64. I've got Win7 64 sitting at home ready to install).

running windows 7 / 64bit on a new dell laptop at home, it is very good.

the most noticeable improvement for me is in photoshop cs4 64 bit... fast and stable.

Overall the OS is well worth it. Microsoft got it right for once.
