This laptop was bought with Vista, with an option to upgrade as soon as W7 came out which it did shortly after I bought it.

So now I'm coming to reinstall W7 and the product key on the label's not being recognised.. waaaaahh!

It will be an OEM one for specific build disks most likely.

Had that recently to the point that MS want £129 for a new product key as the "software is not genuine" and "you may be a victim of software piracy" - twunts.....

It's for Vista, that's the issue.

Apple operating systems don't need keys.

But given that updates are free anyway, they don't need to worry about keys.

What was the upgrade process? If you reinstall Vista first and use the key you have then you may get the upgrade path to W7 again?

This, in fact phone them - they are usually pretty good about this sort of thing.

Yeah I want to avoid reinstalling Vista then Windows - ballache.

I've got an external SATA cable arriving tomorrow so looks like I should be able to pull it from the old disk. Still legit but requires less phoning around. I can wait til then.

Otherwise, I'll call. Ta.
