Have got a ultralight laptop / high powered netbook with W7, which came with no installation media. Would like to make recovery media to allow me to fix my boot sector (I have dual boot Linux I'd like to remove), but the Windows tool insists on making a DVD, and complains I have no DVD writer attached (no optical media on this) so won't do anything. Anybody know how to make recovery media on a bootable USB stick - or a reliable source of the W7 recovery media?

Unfortunately that doesn't work as it requires burning a CD first. Fortunately it has a link to

which suggests a way of doing it without - not tried it yet, but thanks.

aracer..........look up using a tool called ImageX which is built into the OS. It is all fairly straightforward. Basically you capture the image using this tool which then stores the image to a removable device (your flash stick). In conjunction with a PE environment this will then recover your windows when you need to reinstall.

Just to add, you ideally need 2x sticks. One for the Windows PE boot environment with imageX....this can be a small 256mb if you have one lying around and then you will need an additional one to store the .wim (the windows image). The Windows PE environment will allow you to hot swap these if you only have limited USB ports.
