Windows 11 not shutting down

So since Tuesday this week my Windows 11 laptop wont shutdown, i can click shutdown and it powers off but reboots straight away

I know Microsoft have an issue with update KB5073455 that can cause this and its meant to only affect Windows 11 23H2 and I'm using version 25H2

I've tried every trick Google can come up with to fix the issue, turning off fast boot, changing various settings with no luck, even Microsoft's temporary fix for the shutdown issue doesn't work (using command prompt and typing in a shut down command but my laptop still reboots by its self

Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again?

Wait till it goes to sleep and then sneak up very quietly, slam the lid closed, then take its battery out before it has time to wake up.

We are having this with work laptops after a recent update.

Only solution we've been offered is a hard turn off with the power button. I have had to explain to younger colleagues how to do this.

There was a problem with one of the latest MS patches. What you are seeing is because of that. I think they said that, if it was super-important to you, revert the hotfix. Or something.

Our team has a whole list of tickets open for this. Apparently the IT guys have something they can force push, but I don't know the specifics. Probably a revert of an update?  No help to anyone with a non-enterprise lappy.

I rarely do shutdown, only restart (for the updates), or just leave it to go to sleep or shut the lid.

Dunno if desktops have a similar issue?

Does it work if you hold Shift when you click Shutdown?  If so, do this:

Roll back the update or tolerate it until there's a new update.

Best thing is not to allow windows to update as soon as updates become available.. It's not the first time widows updates have caused issues, and a million quid says it won't be the last.

Work machines will probably need to be updated for compliance reasons, but the best strategy for a home user is to delay updating until you get sick of seeing the 'updates are ready to install' message.

Weird thing is I'm not on the version of Windows that has this issue and after checking my update history i don't have the update that causes this issue installed!

At least i can do the hard power off for now

I did briefly wonder if it was actually an intentional thing to make sure PCs are always on so that they can collect data in the background to feed the AI bots 😉

Then I remembered that MS have pretty aggressive time set for going to sleep and disabling wifi etc. "to save power", which boogers up workflow. And us enterprise users can't override it.  And they have all our data in the cloud anyway, so would be pointless.

I had this with one of my laptops yesterday.  Did the hard power off thing.  Seemed fine after I powered it back on.

My W10 desktop has done it periodically for years after an update.

I normally use the sleep mode when I shut it down but it restarts so I have to use shut down, it seems to sort itself out after a few days

'And us enterprise users can't override it.'

In an 'enterprise' environment you should have a department testing updates before they are allowed to roll out across an estate of PC's.

I had this and a few other issues relating to USBC ports on my work laptop this week after an update. I forced restart a few times without success then IT Desk got me to properly hold down power button for full 30secsc when forcing shutdown. It seems to be “turn out off and on again MAX” option and it fixed everything.

It's called a "dirty shutdown."  If you're going to do this, do it at the point where it restarts (ie, where it should have powered off but didn't).  If you habitually do it with a running Windows system, something will eventually break.

There are issues with the January update. It messed up my wife's Outlook. She'd deleted a load of emails, about to re-cycle them, then outlook would crash. It then restored all of them

Microsoft know about it. Fix is to remove the update until new one is available.

I had to do few of the holding 8 seconds power down on my Win10 PCs last night.  Not sure I why it happened so often yesterday but after several attempts it got stable.  I know Win10 does not get update anymore but not sure if it is related.

You can get updates for another year on 10. It asks for an email address but you can just make something up - there's no validation involved.
