Took the singlespeed for a spin up the A49 to Wigan town centre earlier this evening, about 7ish. Spun down a small alley onto King Street for the return home and noticed all was not well. Now King Street in Wigan is the hub of the night life and 7 o'clock on a Friday tends to be the time when the after-work-quick-drinkers and early-starters coincide, i.e. quite busy. Not tonight. All the bars had their doors shut and it was earily quiet. Then I looked up the street and noticed the mobile, steel Police cordon at the end of the road. Oh and the heavily body armoured police officers standing round. I figured nonchalance was probably the best approach so I casually cycled up to the cordon, "Can I just squeeze through there buddy?" says I. "Yeah, no problem" says stormtrooper, obviously confused as to where "man-who-should-be-old-enough-to-know-better" has sprung from. "Cheers dude" and off home I go. Just had a quick scan of the Interweb and there's nothing apparent so not sure what was going on. Looked pretty heavy for an early Friday evening. Even in Wigan.
Just wondered if anyone had heard anything.

a lot of the bars dont open till about 8.30p.m now especially near the top end

I knew a lad from Wigan who went out on a night and would all take turns with his mates fighting the next bloke who walked through the door of the pub. No matter who it was, local, bouncer, copper, the next lad in turn would have to start a fight with whoever walked through the door.
I didn't like him very much.
