I've been scratching my head with this one - I would be grateful for any help in finding a solution; internet searches haven't helped much.

Context - two rural buildings (house and workshop) about 100 meters apart, one phone line with a wired extension to the workshop, but separate electrical circuits. The wifi is unreliable between the house and the workshop and as the electrical circuits are different, I cannot use a powerline extender. Is the only solution a wireless booster, or is there a better solution with an old router I have and the BT extension socket in the workshop?

BT extension socket wont help .

Can you measure the distance more accurately? If its under 100m then I would be looking at running cat5 into the external building. (the 100m has to be from the existing router to inside the external building)

You can’t just tether from your phone? How much data do you need?

Are they separate circuits from the same consumer unit,  or completely separate?  Anyway you could add a socket on the outbuilding circuit from within the house?  This would let you experiment with a powerline thingy (no idea if they work over that distance though).

What about a couple of mesh routers near the windows of each building?  It's asking a lot , but with an uninterrupted line of sight, they might be ok.  Although this could be an expensive experiment!

My out buildings have their own consumer unit but I found that powerline adapters did work from the house although they were a bit unreliable. In the end I ran a length of Cat-6 cable from the house. My cable run was only about 50m though.

Use a dedicated point to point WIFI Link. TP Link do some cheap options that will cover that easily for you.

Just make sure you have line of sight for the links and use a laser to align them as close as you can.

+1 for this.  The official limit for a single run of Cat5e is 100m between two active devices.  You might get away with longer but you're out of spec and will start to see performance issues if you go any longer.
