What's Bloody wrong with the footballing authorities, scots, welsh and n irish FA have released a statement saying they'd never agreed to a team. Why, theyre more than happy to let the athletes, archers, rowers whatever else compete under the GB mantle but why not football?? If nothing else we might do alright???

Because it would just end up being an England starting 11 since none of the scots/welsh/n irish players would be good enough to get in the team.

Because the Scots. welsh, norn irish all play as individual nations in all other football competitions and have a vote in Fifa.

Entering a GB team is seen as giving ammunition to those who want this to change and to have a GB team in all competitions and only one vote in Fifa for GB

There was a thread on this the other day. Jist of it seems to be that the FAs think that if they agree to it, in future competitions we will be asked to compete as GB rather than individual nations and thus they will no longer be required.

I think the argument is that putting a GB team in to the Olympics somehow sets a precedence for future international tournaments and they will somehow not be able to compete independently in the future.

Apparantly the BOA and the FA have now decided that there will be a GB team - despite no agreement from the Scots, welsh or norn ireland.

http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/home-news/sfa-fury-at-british-olympic-team-claim-1.1107912

They are claiming there is an agreement when there is not. Big mistake.

Why can't you accept our decision not too?
I assume the stumbling block has something to do with the FA looking to take charge of the SFA and FAW, something we can't accept. So maybe the better question is why does the FA want to disband the national teams?
I was going to start a thread on this but considered it to be classic trolling material, which it is... 😈

As a Welshman, I'd be perfectly happy to see a British Lions type set up.

How is it we can put together a Lions rugby team and still play independantly as well, but not football? Is it just FIFA flouncing again?

it's all to do with the home nations insisting on having a seat at fifa. quite why the likes of wales and scotland should be more priviledged than say uruguay who have actually won the world cup is beyond me.

should england have a permanent seat ? hard to argue a case for that either.

So maybe the better question is why does the FA want to disband the national teams?

easier to include the cash cows of rangers and celtic in the epl if there is a uk fa.

I think the BOA have made their minds up. I'm confident there will be a "British" team even it's solely made up of english players!
Personally, I respect the choice of the Scots, Welsh and NI FA's to retain some independence. It's their call and they can do what they want.
They cannot stop their players playing though as they don't own them, so Gareth Bale might get a game.

Sorry DS why is it classic trolling material?? I was just asking the question as I heard on the news this morning that those three fa's had said we've never agreed to anything! Only turns into a troll when the usual suspects start spouting bollox! And to be fair my question has been somewhat answered, with the comment about the other fa's worrying about losing their status within FIFA, which to be honest I didn't know!

Because you are entering a clear area of polarised opinions. I'm not calling you a troll, just that the topic will probably degenerate into the typical Google fest of cut'n'paste spurious facts and insults. Calm down you nobber! 😉

as above sets a precedent of a UK team which the other nations dont want.

So why not a British Lions style team? If it works for rugby...

There is a bigger question here - why is Football in the Olympics at all? The Olympics should be reserved for sports where an Olympic medal is the highlight of that sports roll of honours. For Football an Olympic Gold is a long, long way down that list.

Convert +1.

Plus the Lympics was meant to be about non-'professional' sports and sportspersons. Ah well spose you can't do owt about that anymore, but Footie has enough other competitions that it don't need the Lympics.

A GB team would be nice though. Might help to diffuse some of the stupid 'I'm no' British I'm Scawtish' type crap. Bring us a bit closer together, have something to cheer as a United Kingdom.

I am sure there are plenty of other Olympic sports that aren't seen as that particular sport's pinnacle of achievement - tennis for example. Or road cycling.

Actually the GB team could get a decent left winger - Bale, a goalie - Gordon, maybe an ok defender - Evans. With a bit of tinkering the tem could be stronger than any of the 4 nations.

That's my take on it too.

I'm a football supporter but for me it's about the club - Prem, FA Cup and Champions League in my case. Others follow the national side and are interested in Euro & World Cup. But the Olympics are an irrelevance.

There are some sports that will really interest me when the Olympics come around but football, tennis and golf are not on the list.

The little FAs are legally obliged to release "their" players aren't they? They're just kicking up a fuss to protect the chairman's jobs.

I think the bigger target is to have Wilshere and Ramsay in the midfield together, personally.

Well they can just jolly well go and see the Arsenal play then, cant they!
There's no place in the Olympics for these glorified idiots. If I want to see an 11 man GB team, I'll go and see the hockey 😆

yep I am pretty sure you telling people it is crap to claim you are Scottish not British and forcing them to have a united team will bring about the harmony you suggest..excellent idea. Should we unite teams in Liverpool or London etc to achieve a similiar goal of brotherly love?

I think you'll find that the Irish, Scots and Welsh FA's don't have any interest in what the athletes, archers, rowers whatever else get up to.

And anyway

Isn't this thread about the irish version of the games - the O'Lympics?

It is. Unfortunately for Fred, he tries to play up to some strange accent - hence the weird and wonderful dialect he fancifully types in at times.

Actualy.........

Olympic football is IIRC under 21 + 3 other players? Which is the closest to being non-professional as you can be in football.

So you can't field the normal england 11.

Its under 23 + 3 others, isnt it?

Either way, how many people honestly care about Olympic football? Its a total non event, GB team or no GB team.

The other UK associations think that a Team GB may lead to the end of a) their independent status as footballing nations and b) to their unique positions on the FIFA committee. Why the English FA is quite so willing to jeopardize this one can only guess at....

The main issue I have as well as the other FA's is the arrogance of the FA and the BOA stating they have historic agreements etc when no such agreements are in place with anyone other than the FA.

pretty funny then that the largest single sporting event in the world is the World Cup Final, no?
Or that this thread is even happening.

still it must be pretty difficult for you to resist demonstrating your free thinking originality when presented with an opportunity to spout the same old pish.

a goalie - Gordon

The goalie would be McGregor not Gordon. Even if Gordon was fit (and unfortunately he rarely is) he's probably lost the Scotland No.1 jersey now anyway.

yeah, but then gordon could play as he's nothing to lose. mcgregor's a professional footballer (as opposed to part-time cripple) so injury in a pointless tournament could damage his career.

TeamGB on a football pitch = conundrum.

Who would I support?

Currently it's 1. Scotland & 2. anyone playing England.

Who would I support with TeamGB? 😉

FIFA have given an unequivocal statement that it is of no interest or concern to them, and there will be no repercussion to a GB team in the olympics. However, it would appear that a combination of a lack of self confidence and possibly xenophobia on the part of the minor FA's in Britain has undermined that position. Shame: personally I would have loved to see the likes of Giggs et al get the opportunity to play internationally alongside peers of his own calibre.
