Just taken out my towing eye to attach to the car but there are no threads. The eye shaft is smooth and shaped like a flathead scewdriver at the end. No obvious way to take a cover off the shaft. Hole appears to be threaded but hard to see? Citroen C4. HELP

Yes, I've come across this - I went to tow a Peugeot (same design of towing eye) back to the dealer and there was no thread.
I'm always surprised that French manufacturers don't take more care with the towing eye design - it is the most regularly used component on the car after all...

I assume they just forgot to thread it or am I missing something?

In fairness its the first time I've needed it in 10 years. The only other time it properly broke down was a starter motor so I could bump it. The rest (and there's been plenty) has been wear and tear.

The 1980s called and would like their joke back.

The reliability index is useful, but as ever, you can prove anything with statistics.
I work as a Roadside breakdown patrol for a well known motoring organisation and all I can say is I see a lot of French cars that have stranded their owners at the side of the road.
It may be that other makes have more faults (I'm looking at you, VAG group) but they are less terminal meaning the car is driven to the dealer as opposed to being towed in by me.

The plural of anecdote is not data.

(sorry, I know it's old but I've been waiting to use that one for a while 😆 )

Fair point.
But I've done around 15,000 breakdowns now so you could say my anecdotes are data...

Actually I reckon that the experience of a breakdown mechanic that's done 15,000 call outs, is probably more relevant than stats from a warranty company that only has details of breakdowns that result in a warranty claim.

And how many Bugatti Veyrons or Austin Allegros have you had to tow?
Just contemplating my next purchase 😉

You've narrowed it down to those two?

They're surprisingly similar looking.
