I routinely suffer from muscle cramps during long rides. They pretty much always strike in the same place - inner thigh - after about 3-3.5hrs. I drink plenty fluids (1ltr/hr, with electrolyte supplement) and eat regularly.

Is there something obvious I'm not trying, or is it just a case of (i) conditioning, and (ii) being genetically unlucky.

Basically, it really p!sses me off!

Had that a couple of times, it's not pleasant!

Used to get cramp in my calves a lot, but long after a ride when sleeping. Used to take Magnesium supplements to stop that, have now stopped taking them (at least a couple of years ago) and no more cramp there.

Try altering your riding position slightly

Thats where I get it but have been drinking a lot of tonic water (quinnine content supposed to help)and don't seem to be suffering as much as I was.

It's funny you should say that FD, because I never got cramp riding a HT, only in the past 5 years, since switching to FS. I put it down to leaving my mid-twenties, as much as anything else, but I have always wondered if I have adopted a different riding position on the FS.

So, what foods contain magnesium, or do I have to take it as a supplement, and should I mix gin or vodka with the tonic, and does it have to be slimline?

I suspect its a lack of fitness thing rather than an electrolyte problem; it only ever happened to me when I was racing, or during the times I really over-extended myself.

I suspect you're right crikey. The annoying thing is that I am much fitter now than I was when I didn't suffer cramps. That said, I have spent an increasing amount of time behind a desk, which doesn't do your muscles any good.

Another reason to resent my job!
