Ah right, so you've deemed its ok to not be respectful of other peoples views on here because....well, because you say so.

Yes that's right. Took a while, but you got there in the end, eh? Well done. You can have a little lie down now if you want. 😀

Now, I may have misunderstood your post, but you seem to be saying that nothing happens as a result of people being offensive. I for one would disagree with that.

I think the whole point of the phrase "sticks and stones" is the what people say is generally not an issue and you should generally ignore it, but physical violence isn't acceptable. Which applies almost as well with the unfortunate incident with your son - clearly it was not acceptable to use violence although in general what people say is not really important. However in the case of people with additional burdens, it's clearly not very nice to upset them with words either as they're not overly well equipped to deal with it logically and rationally. Unlike the majority of the population. You can't blame someone elses actions on saying something offensive. We're all individuals, we all have the ability to determine right from wrong, even at a young age - the little gits that kicked your kid are to blame, not the person making a joke possibly coicidentally in the same month. Jeez.

I've only read the first page, and now jumped to the end - cos I can't be ar£ed to read all the arguing and also everyone repeating what someone else has said.
Personally, I'm happy to accept that we're all different, and all have our own opinions.
As with this thread, if it doesn't appear to be interesting, I'll simply not read it.

I'm not gonna get too deep into it on here, but the fact that they used the 'excuse' that 'he's just a mong' may have been connected to Gervais's 'repopularisation' of the term. jeez.

Same old STW.

Same old arguments.

Same old reasons I don't post as much as I used to.

Even the 'feelgood' threads can't counter the bitter core of territorial pissing that occurs here.

That one woman says they find creepy the people siding with the two women who were offended by sexist posts. does not constitute a robust and final proof that people who say you can be as sexist as you like are right.

Interesting to see some of the chief apologists for what was just unpleasant and unnecessary behaviour in what is a public space using this one person's opinion as justification for their Neanderthal views...

Their argument goes -if a woman thinks language is sexist, they are being oversensitive, if a bloke thinks it is sexist they are being creepy... 🙄

Actually quite a few of the people who took vehement positions on either side in that original thread do come across as creepy to me, as a relative newb here. But they are creepy in threads about all manner of things.

I think the whole point of the phrase "sticks and stones" is the what people say is generally not an issue and you should generally ignore it,

you should try walking up to random strangers and insulting them and their wifes...let me know how it goes.

In answer to the original question, asking a bucnch of men why women don't post won't give you an answer.

It may be just a coincidence but I've noted one female hand wringer generally rocks up and chastises me about five minutes before I get a warning or banned.

when you were last banned you were being a total git.

I think I reported you, can't remember for sure, but you had it coming. Feel free to reciprocate...

But I agree with your first sentence. If STW is serious about this, they need to canvas women's opnion.

just imagine a forum where the majority were women.
not somewhere most blokes would even try to become part of as they wouldn't last 5 minutes. it's easier for women to do the same with a male dominated forum.
men and women are different but have some things in common. deal with it.

Why aren't there more women posting on the forum?

because:

They have lives

they may ride, but they aren't geeks

they find endless naval gazing and introspection dull

Ditto with key board warriors and pedants

oh and what that goatlung/sheeps teste/bullheart fella up there said as well

If STW is serious about this, they need to canvas women's opnion.

IIRC they did and the overwhelming view was that having a "women's forum" in additon to the Bike and Chat wasn't going to work for various reasons.

STW occasionally reminds me of your favourite pub - you can wander in at any time of day or night and find a friendly group to have a chat with, mingle etc except that of late the table in the far corner seems to have become the haunt of 6 or 8 loud blokes arguing with each other, butting into other peoples conversations, telling crude jokes and generally being obnoxious all the while thinking they're hilariously funny and popular. Occasionally the bartender comes over and tells them to keep it down or throws one of them out before that person dons an alternative name, sneaks in the side entrance, mingles for a bit then rejoins his mates in the corner and it all goes back to the same old unpleasant background noise.

ST at it's best can be an incredible place full of supportive, funny, intelligent people; at it's worst it's dominated by the loud table in the corner...

I don't find guys who have a problem with sexism creepy, just like I don't find straight people who speak out against homophobia or white people who speak out against racism creepy. I don't think that they're trying to ingratiate themselves with the ladies, I think that it's geniunely their opinion. I find it more depressing that people think that blokes can't speak out against sexism without there being a hidden agenda.

I find that my female mtbing friends (myself included) are too busy to be reading or posting on STW all day everyday.

It's a funny place with lots of humour and good advice, but there are one or two on here that have their opinions and can't imagine that someone else may not agree. I'm not as well educated as most on here, so don't feel comfortable putting my case across.

For me it's the photographs (they are some of the best I've ever seen -grumm, duncan., stuartieC, Zokes etc) that keep me coming back and the really funny entertaining folk eg. Cougar, Harry the spider, Samuri, ourmaninthenorth,TSY, binners and some I can't remember.

All the chaps I've ever met from here on a ride have been fantastic and some have become really good friends, long may that side of STW continue.

Kevevs - keep your dangly bits to yourself.

Well I am aware that my woodworking has generated a fair bit of inertest, but youse'll just have to wait until the Fullness of Time, when all shall be received.

Currently I am experimenting with different finishes; varnish gives a nice glossy finish, but is a bit of a PITA to apply, and oil gives a softer finish but is easy to apply. Both seem to require several coats to get a good finish though, and the oil isn't as good on softer more porous surfaces. I think that would be better on harder wood surfaces really.

Tomorrow I might go to B+Q and buy a small plane, and a hand file. I'm also looking for a little hand drill, and a small handsaw.

A small plane ? A little hand drill ? A small handsaw ? Why does everything need to be diminutive in size? Get some proper man-size tools, ffs.

Unless you're kitting out Santa's workshop.

I've got little haynds, and don't need gert big tools as they will be unsuitable for the purposes for which I need them.

I'm loathe to involve myself in this, but I will anyway just to make these few points...

- Clubber's friend is probably right about one or two "creepy" characters, but she underestimates the tendency of some otherwise rational and non-creepy people to take an extreme position simply to place themselves in opposition to their perceived internet "enemy".

- The internet is inherently arguey (even mumsnet, according to my wife), women are generally less interested than men in arguing.

- The best threads on here (usually about actually riding mountain bikes) don't seem to be affected by pointless arguing among frustrated social inadequates, funny that.

- Some people really are not as funny as they seem to think they are.
