[Closed] Why are my carrots so ugly?

I mean really ugly!

I think they are supposed to be a chantenay.

I once read something about carrots needing heavy ground to drive down into. Mine just twist around themselves and come out in a writhing bundle. The ground is a pretty good, well manured (too well?), well watered, well drained. Not very heavy ground though.

Carrot inbreeding?

Pretty carrots aren't always tasty carrots.

They'll do all sorts of things if they hit stones in the ground, if there's too much manure in there they'll fork, if waterings inconsistent then they can start growing extra nodules.

On the bright side, looks like no carrot fly!

Looking at this, the manure could be the problem? Too much nitrogen in the soil too?! Is this what manure adds?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Try and sell them as art.
Call them "Half carrot half shrimp"
I'm sure that prat Saatchi will give you a couple of million for them.

I echo what thepurist says. Did you dig over the veg patch where these were sown? If so that causes the above to happen as the soil structure has been disturbed. The root goes down, hits a lump of soil then forks around it. Carrots like soil that hasn't been dug over and not too manured. If you want nice straight carrots you could try sowing in big pots filled with sand. We're now heading into veggie show nerdiness! 🙂

That's a new level of ugly carrot, nice work.

We had similar a couple of years ago. Doug up the bed and sifted it so no stones/clods to disturb growth.

Light loose sandy soil that's not too heavy. My grandfather used drainpipes buried into the ground filled with a mixture of sand and well sifted soil.

A whole new level of geekiness

Not sure what to be more impressed by. The carrot or the facial hair.

Have you seen the size of the onions in the background 😯 ?

I've just seen the competition...

Maybe if you put it in a saucer of water on the kitchen window sill it'll grow a bit more?

How do you get something like that out of the ground without breaking it?

Grow it in a length of soil pipe and then just split the pipe to extract the carrot.

How does the carrot wear those glasses hanging out the front of it's shirt? Surely carrots would be better with a monocle or contacts.

Agreed, corn is much more suited to wearing glasses.

Stoner, I could only glance at your OP, but have you sneaked your penis into your carrot picture?!

Soil too rich. Rich soil makes carrots split lots of ways. For long straight ones you want pretty poor soil.

Sharkbait - much like hora's fine member, mine is too pretty for such a line up.

Given how inexpensive carrots are I think we might give them a miss next year. Except maybe for humour value 🙂
