What shows are worth seeing?
You don't know until you go and see it. Most will be good, there may be some crap. Don't feel you have to sit it out if you think its rubbish.
My pal is in this. She doesn't do crap, so this is a good bet.
"Elsie and Mairi Go to War" 4th - 20th August, Dovecot, Venue 198
Should have said that I am looking for some decent comedians, but cheers anyway.
Most will be [s]good[/s] crap, there may be some [s]crap[/s] good, and it will all be overpriced.
Fixed that for ya!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember a Fringe director saying in the press that it was a good thing that there were so many rubbish shows, as it made the good ones all the more worthwhile!
See Arj Barker. Funny man. He's Brett and Germaine's mate (who runs the shop) in Flight of the Conchords. He was their warm up act for the live tour and I was annoyed to have missed the first half of his set.
Yes, this weekend. My choices of shows have been so poor in the past that my friend won't let me pick this year...two blokes doing 'Yorkshire humour' standup - we were desperate to walk out but it was such a small theatre we didn't fancy the heckling. A mind reader that couldnt read minds, he was really naff. A really bitter middle aged woman who hated all men doing stand up, we cringed most of the way through.
Have seen some good stuff too. La Clique were fantastic. The late night stand up varieties often turn out to be pretty good.
Good. God. No.
I've managed to plan to be out of the city 3 weekends out of 4, and on the fourth I'm pretty much obliged to get involved, might just hang about Bristo Square and Spiegeltent eating Aberdeen Angus burgers like I always do.
[/local grumpiness]
Hacks me off that the locals get so grumpy about the Festival & Fringe.
The city comes alive for a month. There is an immense amount to see and do. It is hugely vibrant, sociable and entertaining.
But 70% of locals stay at home in front of the TV and just bitch about the extra traffic and noise 🙄
...and expense!
Well if you fancy something a little different - but maybe still with a bit of stand-up (fnrr fnrr) - a mate's wife produces 'Five Clever Courtesans' which has got good reviews for their shows elsewhere.
Graham, you don't live here, that's why.
Once you've seen one starry-eyed, shouting, amateur thespian desperately hawking their show, you've seen them all.
I DO like the late opening, and the festival venues like Spiegel/Bristo/Pleasance, and I do like the influx of people to the city.
In fact, its just the thespians I don't like! 😀
It brings a great deal of money into the city which makes it nice for the rest of the year.
I avoid the town centre for a month or so - I do enjoy the fireworks tho - watched from my roof 2 miles away.
Not been to a show for years

I lived in Edinburgh for five years and enjoyed the festival every time. Never once moaned about it. (Or the Xmas gardens and hogmanay for that matter). 😀
If I could then I'd pop up for a week this year, but I have a three month old that takes priority now 🙂

Short-termer! Give it 20!

This hits the nail on the head. Try walking anywhere near the Royal Mile while drama students wearing doctor's coats, drag or some other 'humourous' fancy dress accost you with flyers that celebrate the three star review that their friend's mum gave them.
I love the Spiegeltent and George Square because you don't get this, but for the most part the line-up is rubbish and on the whole over-priced.
I work in george square... you do get a bit sick of them all... plus the longer queues places for lunch...
You go get very adept at blanking and ignoring people though. And I have to say, I do like seeing the odd show. No time for it this year tho 🙁
l lived in edinburgh for years and years (not some five year lightweight - that's like a holiday!) and by the end of it i was heartily sick of the festival. but then i was sick of the traffic, parking, tickets to the new year thing and all of that.
having said that i will be back in town tomorrow having a look around the art festival (am i one of those types - oh yes i am!). worse still i'm doing three gigs over the course and am connected to another exhibition. and i'll be taking my other half thru on friday so she can have a wander about.
she loves the festival, had never been until about five years ago, something i thought of some sort of human rights crime, so got over my festival related grumpiness to take her along to. and, of course, seeing it thru someone else's eyes it was great.
and so my festival related hypocrisy was complete. true there are still some things that make me want to gouge my own eyes out but this is because i am a grumpy person who should, instead of bitching, go on about the many wonderful, even transcendental stuff i've seen there over the years and the brilliant people i've met as a result.
but that'd be a bit gushy now wouldn't it?
Assuming you're not easily offended, see Jim Jeffries if you get the chance
will be up there for a wedding that weekend so yes
now question is if i take my dh bike and get an uplift day at inners, glencoe or ft bill?
Yes, but only by accident as I didn't know it was on when I booked the travel to Edinburgh
Of course you do, but after the wedding. Turning up broken might be bad form.
Still a fair way to fort bill! It's a bit of a mission for a day trip. Inners probably a better use of your time.
