Always thought they were a bit lumpen and dull. The noughties version of Nirvana.

You probably have to be a Led Zep fan, eh?

chakaping - On the contrary, Led Zeppelin had one of the greatest drummers of all time, The White Stripes did not.

Couldn't agree more. Love Zeppelin but never understood the fuss about the White Stripes. I'm actually quite pleased about the news. Hopefully Jack White can now concentrate on his other (considerably better, in my opinion) bands.

Will be missed... though must admit I thought they'd split years ago. Saw them live a few times (festivals, brixton and I think sbush empire) and had a most excellent experience each time. Jack White has amazing stage presence.

I thought they were quite refreshing. Jack White seems to be involved in all sorts of stuff playing and producing with various people. Talented bloke (whether you like his music or not). Obviously has a great relationship with his ex too.

Puts a whole new meaning on the saying "at least when you divorce your wife she's still your sister" 😆

Saw them just after 'White Blood Cells' came out, and they remain one of the most incredible live bands I've seen. Can't say I'm too sad to see them go though, they had a good innings.

they were good a few years ago, peaked at Elephant then it went a bit rubbish. I always thought the Black Keys were a better two piece but there again they peaked a few years back with Rubber Factory.

Gutted I loved their stuff and saw them live 😀

And contrary to popular opinion I thought Meg was the ideal drummer for the band anything more sophisticated would have been too much.

But hey ho, hopefully more Dead Weather.

-1 for trailmonkey

To criticise her drumming is missing the point.

why/how ?

if it sounds awful and spoils your enjoyment of the music then it's worthy of criticism.

Trailmonkey - I don't think she is a good drummer in the conventional sense, but she could bang out a simple rhythm and I think that worked in the White Stripes.

Disappointed I didn't get to see them live.

Racconteurs don't quite do it for me. While I like TWS and The Kills, I just don't *get* the Dead Weather.

I often hear Meg's drumming slated, but it works for me. If I wanted musical instruments to be performed technically perfect I'd listen to Yngwie Malmsteen (and be bored).

John Bonham was far from technically perfect - he was tight but loose and great for it.

Meg White is just rubbish. 😉

yeah, but a drummer has to be able to at least keep time otherwise it just doesn't work. doesn't have to be flowery because in all honesty i don't really like that but there has to be a basic minimum level of competence and for me, she was way below it.

anyhow, i can see that lots of people really like them so i'll dip out now and let the appreciation continue

I always thought Meg was a modern Mo Tucker.
It may sound a bit flat but it would change the whole dynamic of the band is someone else did it.

Yeah, by making the dynamic 20 times better. 😉

The guitar player and singer was ok though.

I had tickets to see them live a couple of years ago, whe they cancelled the tour - I was gutted.

What is it about Jack White? He throws himself into everything he does absolutely 100% and that to me is the only way to make music worth listening to. Meg to me is a simple and complimentory drummer - I have no problem with her at all!

Just watched that Death Letter clip....hearing and seeing something played like that it actually makes me catch my breath in places....freaking awesome!!!!

Hey, who's been doing my arguing for me? 🙂

I bet there are people who don't find Meg attractive too...
Obviously it was all about Jack really but the simplicity of it all combined with his guitar playing was part of the appeal.
Don't think seeing The Dead Weather live would be half as exciting.

Saw them in Blackpool a few years ago (just after Elephant had been released). It's the gig they made a DVD of.

Corruscatingly loud. Loved it.

I'll miss The White Stripes. Saw them live twice, they were brilliant. Meg was perfect for the band. Also seen The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. Alison Mosshart is a fantastic frontwoman for the band.

I liked them, but I'm with trailmonkey on just how little I could believe it that a band with that shit a drummer could achieve so much. If this had happened a few years ago, I'd have given a shit. But when I heard it yesterday, I just thought "oh they're still together are they"?

If she'd been in Led Zeppelin, she would've been a shit drummer.
In the White Stripes, she was the perfect drummer.

Whatever...she was shit. Everybody knows she was shit.

She fitted in with the "Jack White could shit on a manuscript and we'd all think it was the second coming" zeitgeist that surrounded The White Stripes for a few years.

I can't comment on the standard of megs drumming, i just know that the overall sound was something that i like a lot. If its technically rubbish, i'm not fussed.

Are there a few jealous drummers on here? OK maybe she isn't even the best drummer in the White Stripes but those first four albums are a great legacy.

Always liked them without being a massive fan, but Jack White is hands down the best performer / rock star / musician I have ever seen live. Saw them at the Glasgow SECC - not usually the best venue IME, and he singlehandedly blew the doors off it.

If Meg is some sort of affront to percussion I'll just have to take the drumming tragics at their word on that, their sound was still great.

What, apart from the guitar, the drumming, the songwriting, the singing, the production work...
So Meg isn't technically brilliant. So what. As others have said she was perfectly competent at keeping time with no unnessessary flourishes, letting Jack do all the important stuff. Bob Dylan is a barely adequate singer, but you couldn't replace him in a Bob Dylan tour. Pity I missed the Stripes live, I always enjoyed watching them on TV. Not enough rocking duo's around. Blood Red Shoes are the only other loud rock duo I can think of currently

Yeah, seen Sleigh Bells (and again in a couple weeks). Great stuff, but not really in Jack's league.
Like most bands though, there's no point trying to explain to those who don't get it. Their loss 🙂

Another thumbs up here, I saw them a few times, the last time at the Blackpool Empress Ballroom gig, absolutely awesome. When we got back to the hotel in the early hours they were sat in the bar with some of what turned out to be the Raconteurs (who were crap live). Again I'm not an expert in drumming technicalities but Meg was one (maybe not equal) half of a great duo.

Found this look back at their non-singles: clicky

It's helped me spot a few stand out tracks from the newer albums that I've not given as much time to as I should.

I liked a couple of their albums, the one with FILWAG and the one before. Really liked Dead Letter Blues.

But, yes, her drumming was at times 'right for the music' but at other times utterly dire. On one or two songs it sounds like a three year old with one drumstick and two drums.

Bum... tish... bum... tish... bum... tish.

see here's the thing, you don't need to be great technically to make good music, there's alot more to music than technicality. I think her drumming was spot on for that band, it was all about keeping a beat for jack white anyhow, anything more would have been a bit much.

As a teen, I had a mate who was always saying things like "I love the keyboards on this track", or "have you heard the drums in this, it's great". But I never really got what he was on about.

I tend to listen to the 'whole' rather than the parts that make it. Obviously I can pick out riffs or solos within a track, but by and large the instruments are just working together to make a complete sound.
As such I'm totally indifferent to Meg's drumming, it's just there. I couldn't tell you a good drummer from a bad one, just that I like some music or I don't.

The only exception for me is with vocalists, I can decide to like or dislike a group based on how the singer sounds in the opening line.
