If you're not a Star Wars fan - press the back button now 🙂
Am looking forward to watching Star Wars with my 9 year old son (I was 9 when I first saw it).
I was all set to watch the new Blu-ray release. Although I've never liked some of the changes in the Special Editions (Gredo shooting first, Jabba, comedy, etc).
So I went off to see if someone had ripped the pre-SE Laserdiscs.
Then I found that there are all sorts of DVD-quality re-edits of the SEs like:
http://fanedit.org/517/ (Jabba gone, Han shooting first, comedy gone, and some great fixes, but also some new scenes and music from the prequels, which I'm not so bothered about).
Then there's the Purest Edition (by the same guy) which has all the good stuff and none of the bad, but I can only find this as a MPEG.
I have a 96" screen, so HD would make a big difference, but at the same time, it would be nice if the version my son saw was close to what I saw.
I've never seen any of these fan edits, so I would have to trust other people who've seen it and go off reviews.
Thoughts?
I have a DVD set which has both the SEs and the original cinema versions (although I think gredo still shoots first). I have never watched the SE ones
"it would be nice if the version my son saw was close to what I saw."
Do you make him wear scratchy jumpers and plastic shoes too?
If you want your son to enjoy the same movie you enjoyed as a kid, the laserdisc rip is the best option. The quality is more than good enough - it is a movie from 1977 after all. The DVD set does not contain the original versions, despite what they would have you believe.
My sons 5 he loves starwars, we watch the vhs ones as they were mine as well
The original versions of the trilogy on DVD are sourced from the laserdiscs
Not this one!

Very good, but one for the die-hards I reckon.
I'm yet to sit through it in one go.

I think they're both from the same source rather than the DVDs being LD copies.
(I've actually got the Laserdiscs...)
ive got the originals on vhs if you want to copy them to dvd not sure about how the quality would come out though!
Do you make him wear scratchy jumpers and plastic shoes too?
No but he does have a mullet!
that should do nicely

Sorry cougar, unlikely as it may seem this is absolutely correct. The only dvd release of the original "unaltered" films was indeed sourced from the 1993 laserdisc releases.

There were a few laserdisc releases, hang on to them. Depending which ones you've got your sitting on up to £1200 worth of shiny plastic! 😯
none of them cos LUCAS HAS RAPED MY MIND TOO MANY TIMES with his changes
ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
......
ok, Star Wars Ep IV SE DVD.
NO BLURAY!!!
Argh - if se, why not blu-ray - has he changed even more?!!
Sorry cougar, unlikely as it may seem this is absolutely correct. The only dvd release of the original "unaltered" films was indeed sourced from the 1993 laserdisc releases.
Yeah, the 2006 DVDs would be worth getting if you can find them for a reasonable price.
that should do nicely
Dear God no.
Argh - if se, why not blu-ray - has he changed even more?!!
yes he has - and the SE DVD comes with the original films as extras (sourced from laserdisc, stereo sound - but that's as good as it gets these days)
wow - I paid about £15 for mine, seems to has gone up in value rather!

Nice for you, but not the best option.
You've got to let him see the same one as his mates, so he can join in and banter with them. Be normal. Don't turn him into "the kid with the weird dad who's stuck in the past ".
Accept that you are now 30 years out of date, and very rarely right even when you are (like now).
Eventually, when he's made his own decisions, he'll want to see the older versions with you, to understand how it used to be. But for now, Ja Ja binks rules.
@alex
yes he added a new 'scream' to ROTJ , vader now screams 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO' the same as EPIII (what an arrogant f****r)
oh and CGI'd some more rocks, and characters and stuff
oh and made the OBI WAN sandpeople-scare-away scream in EPIV sound like he got kicked in the balls!
i mean , if the DVD SE were in *HIS* words "the ultimate way i wanted to see the films", why try and make them more like the utter s*** he wants to call the prequels just to try and mask his utter failure of writing, directing and producing anything since he made millions off the back of his 1 brilliant idea (that others actually executed and made them fantastic films to enjoy)
None one seems to have mentioned it but I guess we need to ask...
You are starting with Episode IV aren't you?
Personally I started with the 2004 Special Editions when my son came to watch them. These were the ones that got a cinematic release and haven't been mucked around with too much. A few extra creatures and ships. The old glaring issue would be the appearance of Jabba in Episode IV.
I have the silver box set - why didn't I get the gold!
hmmm - found them on ebay for £24 delivered. Tempting.
Just to confirm - the Aspect Ratio is correct right?
it is correct - I have seen some people complaining that its 4:3 letterbox, but playing them on my PS3 into a widescreen TV via HDMI it all comes out in the correct ratio
Yeah, the 2006 DVDs would be worth getting if you can find them for a reasonable price.

You're not kidding, just dug mine out to check if Han shoots first (he does) -original woolworths price tag!

I've just had that argument with a friend. Apparently there was an article in "Wired" or some such saying that kids should watch them in the new order. Bollx to that! There'll be no f'in Midichlorians in my son's childhood 🙂
If he wants to watch the prequels when he's 21, then that's fair enough.
Nice for you, but not the best option.

I would do it regardless, but in actual fact my son's best friends have fathers who are similarly minded and have at the very least shown the classic films before the prequels.
Although I think they also play Star Wars video games and watched he Clone Wars, so god knows what tampering has been done to their fragile young minds 🙂
actually - thinking about it some dickering about with "zoom" type settings might be required on a widescreen TV to avoid a squashed image, it's been a while since I've watched them

Well not sure I agree with that but at least the films would get better as you progressed - a part from a step back with ROTJ I suppose.

Really? Gosh.

Innnnnnteresting.
The set I have is identical to this ebay auction (complete with 'first pressing' sticker), mint condition but not factory sealed. He's asking 500 sovs for his.
Where are you getting £1200 from?
Yeah, the 2006 DVDs would be worth getting if you can find them for a reasonable price.
Blimey, I think I paid something like £18 for this in HMV a few years back. £89 on Amazon now !!!
Why are they worth so much? there must be tens of thousands of copies of them around.
I'm leaning towards the fanetid Purist version. I'll download it overnight and have a look tomorrow.
I kind of don't want it to look outdated to my son, so these might be good in that regard.
No expert cougar, I think that set is the 1993 ones. The first three films were released on individual laserdiscs some years earlier and I have seen them for sale around £400 per disc! 😯
without having read anything other than the title i'd say none of them or this might happen....
Why are they worth so much? there must be tens of thousands of copies of them around.
because they aren't making them anymore - it's blu ray SE or nothing now

Oof.
Ta.
Those CAV Laserdisc editions were something special though.
Proper weighty box set.
I have a friend with them and a dedicated home cinema, but there's something putting me off about the faded colours and stereo sound when it comes to showing my son.
