I travel long haul for work a lot and I've just switched jobs so can't see it reducing much in the next couple of years.
I've always thought £200 is stupid money for a pair of headphones but am starting to consider some noise cancelling ones for all the flying. Any recommendations? Bose Quiet Comfort 3 look pretty good...
Dont't bother with active noise cancelling, get some decent in-ear phones like Shure SE215's, and put the triple-flange eartips on, they'll cut most background noise out, about 26dB of attenuation, and you can get them for around £75-80. Custom eartips for greater comfort would add about £120.
I wear them when running noisy machinery, with a background noise level of nearly 90dB.
Oh, and the cables are replacable with the Shures as well, a replacement costing about £40, if you need one, which is unlikely.
Takstar pro 80 from mp4 nation are a great buy. A relative unknown brand but way better than price tag suggests.
i've got some active noise cancelling ones and they're very effective. They also take up loads of space in my bag, stop me sleeping on my side etc.
I've also got some custom in-ear phones (from here) and they're just as effective at blocking out noise. They take up less space and don't get in the way. The IEMs weren't cheap but they sound stunning and have made the active cans redundant.
I have Bose Quiet Comfort 15 and think they are worth it. Just buy when you are in a cheaper country to help take the sting out.
+1 for the Shure SE215's. Superb in ear phones. I use them when the g/f gets animated, renders her silent. Also the Shure warranty is exceptional from my experience.
Yeah, maybe in-ear is a better shout for sleeping; hadn't considered trying to kip on my side on a flight whilst wearing over ear type headphones.
BOSE have just brought out some in ear noise cancelling ones. Probably be better if you are wanting the noise cancelling and to sleep on your side.
A cheapy and cheerful option compared to the shures (spares for you travel bag), look at RHA's MA150's. I've the 450's for my phone (150's as spares) and quality/service from RHA has been brilliant.
I've used a pair of Audio Technica inner ear ones which work pretty well, but have bought myself a set of Bose QC15's which are miles better, but are over ear so a but harder for sleeping in on a long flight.
I'm not sure of the need for in-ear noise cancelling. I guess it might help a bit but there's not that much comes through well fitting IEMs. Custom fit ones go into your ear canal up to the bend (putting them in is basically screwing them into the side of your head) so you really can't hear much while they're in
If you're wanting cheap, Lenco HP080 are supposed to be good for the money
But PSB M4U2 if you can afford it, I detest anything Bose
Have had both Denon and Bose over ear active jobbies.
Denon - Lighter, seemed to have a better battery life, but a little flimsier. As I discovered when hastily extending them in the lounge one day. *Snap*
So, I bought some;
Bose; Build quality seems very good and solid so far, and sound quality is equal to the Denons, which I approve of very much.
If I have one minor quibble with the Bose, it's the carry case. It's a slightly odd shape. The Denons had a more 'regular' shape that seemed to fit around other stuff in my carry on luggage better.
I have recently bought a pair of Bose QC15s, and compared to my previous in-ear headphones they are fantastic, so much background noise just dissapears that flying has become a pleasure again (well almost) especially given that on many flights now you're allowed to use electronics during take-off and landing.
Sound quality is also very good, not quite as good as my Grado SR60s, but really not far off and the difference is only really noticable back-to-back. I bought them in the US where they're not far off half the UK price.
I looked at the review here prior to buying

My colleague bought a pair of the Goldring NS-1000s for about GBP50 and is very happy with them.
