Too much simplistic 'this can all be fixed if we get rid of foreigners/benefits claimants/whatever delete as appropriate ' shit from tabloid comics.

"It can't happen here."

"We are special, or we were until all these foreigners were let in."

Etc.

It's called entitlement and it is not just millennials that exhibit it.

OK, so give me a single reason why they should not be just taken out and shot?

I haven't got one. Do it live on TV and Facebook pour decourager les autres.

In other scumbag news, one industry that doesn't seem to be struggling is fly tipping. The bastards know they won't get caught, even more than usual.

They had taken a power drill to all the tyres.

I’d like to say “unbelievable”, but it’s entirely believable. I suppose the military have to be readied and prepared to secure public services like this before the government can move us to the next stage. In the meantime, we need to spread the message ourselves…

STAY AT HOME

And grow your hair if need be.

If you think that what we’re experiencing now is the “fault” or “responsibility” of Chinese people, then you’re not paying sufficient attention to the science. While SARS-COVID 19 probably originated in bats, there’s no conformation of the transmission vector, it could have been a domestic cat; for instance. If you can’t understand that, i’ll spell it out very clearly: The “wet-market, eeeuuuww they eat bats!?” crap that you’re hearing, is a non story. There are bats with this virus on every continent, and there are domestic cats that hunt them…on every continent. This could’ve happened literally anywhere barring Antarctica.
I can’t believe that in a time of a global pandemic that threatens everyone, people even now can’t stop themselves with this sort of unhelpful shit
After the SARS virus hit, papers were published specifically regarding the specific high likelihood of other viruses originating from Chinese markets.
https://journals.lww.com/co-infectiousdiseases/Abstract/2006/10000/Infectious_diseases_emerging_from_Chinese.2.aspx
https://cmr.asm.org/content/20/4/660

You would think that after an outbreak of SARS/H5N1 etc associated with those markets/farming the state would have banned the practices. But no. Eating weird shit seems to be the de rigour for many. Even with the controlled society. Hope this isn't racist. More of a stab at the government, in the same way having a go at israels governments treatment of Palestinians isn't anti semitic.

Our local heroes have started their nonsense. The ‘Covid19 Action Group’ have set up a hand washing station outside the village shop (commendable) and are now congregated around it berating anyone who tries to enter the shop without using it (not so commendable). They have hijacked all the trolleys to stop people buying too much stuff, so the elderly who can’t manage a basket and need a little trolley are ****ed. And they’ve started blocking lay-bys to stop campervans parking (which I get) but apparently forgetting that lorry drivers working their arses off trying to get goods to shops still need to pull in for their breaks.

A solo jig is fine as long as you keep a sensible distance from the musician

No, means, no - you start free styling then suddenly everyones down the beach on a pandemic weekend. It's a slippery slope.

Ming being merciless is just a policy decision. He can still be angry on top of that, or calm down a bit and dispense evil with a smooth and pleasant demeanor.

Huh, bars in Sweden still open. Kind of expected them to be locked down already.

Is it correct they’re going for herd immunity before having a vaccine?

Some Dr colleagues venting about Matt Hancock's promises of PPE

Today one hospital ran out of hand sanitizer , they got the WHO fact sheet on how to homebrew (kind of meant for developing countries) and have got a local school to make them up batches

Just been to Asda, was well stocked only a few gaps but notably eggs and flour. Very very quiet though, and mercifully stopped the shit loud music in favour of sombre messages from the CEO. Lots of people with gloves on and a few masks, with the older folks generally sporting more PPE.

Till lady said that it was quiet most of the time, it seems people stocked up when they started WFH and have now calmed down.

We are 1 roll into the 9 pack of TP we bought beginning of last week.

We're on roll #3 - clearly a higher throughput with both offspring at home.

Italian flavoured news on panic buying suggested it calmed down there, once people had stuffed their houses with two weeks extra food (and bog roll).

binners

Yeah, well I’m sure they’ll still be expecting a bed, a respirator and a team of overstretched medical staff to look after them if they fall ill

Yeag cos it's Engeeerlaand the Covid-19 won't dare act the same here as anywhere else... lets ignore that Italy isn't even trying to save over 60's for quite a while.
Last week most of the respirators were 50-60, this week its more under 50's...

I’ve read this thread but refrained from commenting until now. I’m working from home and sat next to the dining room window. We live on the road that leads to Macc Forest. The number of people I’ve seen out and heading that way in droves is frankly unbelievable. The message just simply isn’t getting through to a lot of people.

Just been out to get a few essentials and Cardiff is behaving! Shops are quiet with no evidence of panic-buying and those that are out are doing their utmost to stay away from everyone else. I know it's probably mostly due to it being a Monday and everyone's either at work or at home with the kids but the roads are quiet and a complete contrast to yesterday. Be interesting to see if it continues.

I've given detailed lessons on how to use less. When my kids were little they used great handfuls of it, now they appear to be learning to be a bit more economical.

The intensive care numbers look odd to me, Piemonster. Not enough under 60s compared with what doctors on TV news are telling us. I'm not going to claim they are wrong as I haven't seen any national stats, just people talking on TV, and one of the BFM reports now seems to be absent.

Edit: I'm failing to find anything on the breakdown of the ages "en réanimation" (intensive care). Le Monde published a total of 1297 for 20/03/2020 but I can no longer find references to the "1500 of which 50%" under age 60" being bandied about on Saturday - the 1500 would have been about right but I'm beginning to think the 50% under 60 was wrong.

Cassa del kimbers is chaos today

wife is stressing about kids missing school & falling behind,

I have achieved barely any wfh, answered a few emails, helping docs steal stuff from work to keep the NHS running (which at least feels like im contributing)

homeschooling 7yr old, 9yr old & 2x 3yr olds all at once is feeakin crazy, spent all morning downloading stuff school had sent & printing it out (will need to order some more ink & A4!)

took kids out (in batches of 2) for early morning cycle then started schoolwork & keeping 3yr olds from distracting them

wife gets phonecall from her mum (73)- her ex- husband (78) (my father in law) was diagnosed with cancer 3 weeks ago, had radiotherapy for neck tumour, starting chemo for lung ones in a few weeks, he's living with brother in law- (2 young kids & wife- she is freaking out, refusing to leave with house at all, for fear of infecting my fil)
FIL going stir crazy between illnes & isolation, hes very independent normally, lives on a boat has a 'secret' girlfriend several years his junior.

anyway my mum-in-law now going to move in with them but has issues with her ex-husband (they stimultaneously love & hate each other) shes in tears pressuring my wife to come & visit (were in milton keynes, theyre liverpool) to help out with fil & depressed sister in law.

My wifes in tears, knows she shouldnt go up & visit, but worried she will never see her dad again, feeling guilty for not helping with his care & pressured by her mum (who is barely holding it together) , shes now considering going!

any tips?

Spanish numbers for today still looking rather hot, 24% increase in deaths today, although the new cases figure seems to be slowing a little, 15% extra. I guess it is a few days until they turn the corner.

@Edukator

looks low.

the UK deaths figure is tracking the new cases from around two weeks back quite closely

I realise that deaths lag which is why I'm so interested in new cases as they show how effective the measures taken in the various countries are or not. A week into the fairly rigorous confinement measures in France I'm hoping for some improvement in new cases numbers today when they come out for the news at 20h

Midnight tonogjt is not enough time for people to pamic buy
Doesnt give any Manufacture based ed business time to shut down plant
Again not alot of warnings for health care to put new measures d in place to protect vulnerable, who should not be roaming the streets but are the worst offenders, like golfists. My money is on Wednesday 1800 so another 2 full day of freedom then no more fun

So it was an error, Kelvin. 🙁 French numbers are depressing, 3838 new cases and that a week into confinement with 3-6 days from infection to symptoms. I ws hoping for a flattening of new cases today 🙁 Bad day.

this is teh problem government need to be VERY clear about this,
No 10 (cummings) were leaking about social lockdowns etc as a way to nudge people, its part of the behavioural science that has served them so well in the last GE & brexit ref

BUT in this case it simply causes panic buying

I posted this in the FC thread about people all going to forests & beaches yesterday:

To be fair on ‘the public’ we were told that we should go for walks in parks & forests , national trust even opened for free

And just 2 weeks ago government defended decision to keep football matches on , saying that it was fine because outside COVID couldn’t spread easily

We’ve been told to self isolate your family for 14 days if 1 of you gets ill, so people rush out & panic buy 14 days worth of food , which other people see & then panic buy themselves .

Dumping new phrases on the public like ‘social distancing’ ‘herd immunity’ & ‘flattening the curve’ may make Dom Cummings feel smart & superior in meetings but it’s just gibberish to most.

This is a failure of government to communicate clearly

The sprout theory of nudge, behaviour and why you need to say it straight

I can’t stand sprouts. Nudging me to eat them for health benefits won’t make me do it.

In this new paradigm, if I was told clearly and directly to eat the ducking sprout or my lungs stop working, as well as all my friends lungs and the people they know’s lungs too... then I would eat that sprout.

Eat the sprout people.

Or you could say it's been managed well, cause the voice in the country at this very minute is very clearly in favour of extremely draconian measures. Would that have been the case 2 weeks or even a week ago? I doubt it very much tbh.

The government message has been getting more and more serious day by day, they aren't panicking.

I know people like yourself will ignore the above but its fairly obvious if you look beyond personal hatred for johnson and the desire to criticise the gov with every word uttered.

Less severe measures could have been effective if they'd been transmitted well and delivered on time. The goal isn't to get up to maximum clampdown- the goal was to reduce the spread of infection.

I don’t know about you, but if I left the house to get exercise in a local park and noticed there were already a shitload of people doing the same I’d go home. I’m not even that smart either.

I’ve stuck to the house and garden since last Tuesday. A lot of people need to get their heads out of their arses and realise that staying in and away from others is the best thing to do. I’d be all for enforcement at this stage regardless of who’s currently in government.

If the Sunday times article is to be believed (& I do believe it) then this cunning plan is nothing of the sort...

And yes I confess my judgement may be cloided by my long held belief that the Tories & their austerity have ground down the NHS & healthcare over the last 10 years & that Johnson is a lying self serving douchebag...

And there's some merit to the argument that a softly approach might help win over support for a longer term lockdown, but tbh the videos from Italy & Spain should be doing that & the last weekend of people congregating on crowds could well mean 1000s of extra cases

Don't want to sound a negative note, but I've just had 'the chat' with the girls (nearly 17 and almost 14 respectively).

Something I was holding off on for hopefully another 20 years, but we live in surprising times and it definitely pays to be ready.

The overwhelming likelihood is that myself and my wife, late 40s/early 50s, both fairly fit people, and everyone else we know will get through all this- demographically we’re in that camp. But we never really know, so later this week each of them will get an envelope with What to Do and Who To Speak To in the event its necessary. Its scary but necessary.

Anyway- all I wanted to say was: make a will, and make sure you know where your loved ones can find it. Because we just never know.

Anyone know if the bars in the Palace of Westminster are still open?

I haven’t seen anyone, supermarkets, petrol stations, anywhere, wearing gloves. Have you?

Yep. Probably 1/3 of Asda shoppers and all the staff; pizza delivery guy; me picking up a parcel; B&Q staff last week.
