With a fire place so small you barely need a lintel. Remember, with properly crossbonded brick work , the vertical load is born diagonally by the bricks at quite a shallow angle so any lintel over that opening only needs to carry the load of a few bricks. Id say that front arch would be sufficient.

The front arch made up the throat and is made if concrete so a recent addition I dare say, I'd like to open it wider if it will allow there's about 500mm each side of the opening

If you really think the current fire place is a recent piece of work and that there was a larger original fire there, then I would look a course ore two higher up, but I'm not confident you'll find anything.

When I last took one down, and there was nothing there but random rubbish, not even proper brickwork, a builder who was around for some other work wasn't at all surprised. Just there to fill the space and keep the smoke in he said. So we made it back up in a similar fashion.
Oh, and I am impressed with the confidence in your mirror hanging as you batter away at the wall below 🙂

Hmmm, most of the fire back is out now and I'm not convinced the sides look to neat for infill a little more digging to do and it's time to make good

You must be slipping. That's an hour since the Lintel/Linside joke. You're normally quicker "on the draw" 🙂

I dunno. I think there is a big enough differentiation between your 'linside', and my 'lintel inside', to allow both shit puns to stand as separate entities.

If anything, I think you wish you had made that extra leap to where I ended up. Don't worry, though, we can share the internet points, and hopefully that alleviates your megahurtz.

😛
