I understand that holland and Barrett is poor quality stuff but think some Vit D might be useful given my job.

Where's a good place to get some pills man? Sniff

Supermarket? I just have the cheap tesco own brand VitD. Are there good quality and bad quality vitamins?

I was using a spray because I thought it might improve absorption. I just ordered online. I'm now prescribed quite strong vit d and that comes in pill form though so...

What you might want to look at is strength. In theory I think that toxicity level is quite high but it increases absorption of calcium too so that can have its own effects.

I don’t take a multivitamin but I do like to supplement vitamin D. Linwoods to a brilliant milled flaxseed which has vitamin D, so you’re getting a good dose of fibre at the same time. I put it in smoothies, porridge or just with fruit and yoghurt. Get it on amazon.

Tuna, mackerel, salmon, cheese and eggs or if in a hurry the Boots own brand cod liver tablets have a fair amount in them. One of the Seven Seas have quite a lot too. Have to look at the detailed list on the back and compare amounts.

Not managed to find anywhere cheaper that I trust - most of the expensive brands look like you are paying for premium packaging. We should start a singletrack collective to make a premium but well priced MTB mix for slightly aging people covering muscles, tendons and keeping you happy in the cold 😂

I thought that if you have a good balanced diet then you only need vitamins if you have a medical issue??

E.g. taking Vit C tablets for a cold is useless.

Our has the advice changed recently?

You won't get much Vitamin D from food, unless you are eating loads of fish. Or maybe fortified foods.

NHS advice:

But since it's difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during the autumn and winter.

@CraigW - fair point

Ask a vegan, they'll let you know

Our mate was eating so much tinned oily fish a week he gave himself gout from all the purine intake, so there's that to watch out for!

I always thought the same until I got tested. Vit D levels below 1/4 they should be. Unless you eat a lot of oily fish or spend a lot of time with skin exposed to the sun without sunscreen then certainly this far north you need vit d supplementation.

I now take vit d and a multivitamin most day - I can feel the benefit although as always the plural of anecdote is not evidence and how much of it is in my head. If I forget for a couple of weeks I can also feel the difference.

I just asked one. She also said 'food'.

To be even more annoying (can't really lose at this point) I'd go with 'eat a varied and balanced diet'

Note Vitamin D3 is supposed to be better absorbed than D2, so worth looking for that.
I'm sure the stuff from Holland & Barrett is fine. Though probably expensive, unless they have a sale on.

For vegans, its a bit more complicated, as most Vitamin D supplements are made from wool. Soya milk is usually fortified, but you would probably have to drink a litre per day to get enough.
There are some vegan supplements available, eg from Vegan Society. https://www.vegansociety.com/shop/veg-1-supplements

As a matter of interest, what does it feel like if you are deficient in Vit D?

If you leave mushrooms on a sunny windowsill for a bit before you eat them, it increases the vitamin D content 😎

We get a huge tub of D3 from Costco, though not sure how to vouch for the quality. Healthspan stuff seems good if pricey, though normally lots of vouchers kicking about.

And it's not like he doesn't get enough D anyway.
