I am currently a marine biologist. I have been in pretty much the same job for the last 8 years studying environmental effects of offshore renewables. It's getting a bit samey. And renewables developments keep getting cancelled.

I'm thinking it's time for a change. I've even booked a day off work to think about new careers and do some job searching.

So far the brief bit of searching just seems to pull up pages of recruitment agency ads. Where are the real jobs advertised? Or are recruitment agencies the way forward?

LinkedIn? That's where I found my current job and I think a lot of companies are now using it directly rather than using agencies.

I'm on linked in. I get the odd recruitment type looking at my profile but nothing that appears to be a job. I need to spend more time searching through linked in I guess?

It'll be one of the first things I do on my day off.

Worth a proper look around then - you can search for jobs easily on there - use the drop-down menu to the left of the search box to select 'jobs'.

Good hunting!

You probably already know this, but some recruitment agencies will advertise jobs which either don't exist (in order to get candidates' details) or which they don't have an agency contract with the employer for, but reckon they can (try) to get a referral fee for. I'd always recommend trying to go direct if you can by researching suitable employers and checking their websites, since I reckon this shows more initiative than going through an agent, and also makes you a more attractive candidate due to a lack of agency fee.

I've been on jobs.ac.uk for a few years now. But only seen two jobs of interest, one of which was a PhD. That's partly what is making me think it's time for a career change.

Cheers Macavity. That's a good list to be going through.
Perhaps I should have added I'm giving serious thought to a career change. Marine Biology doesn't pay well. Plus my wife is also a marine biologist. That makes two very specialised jobs in one house. I would ideally like something more mainstream in case we had to move.
