Currently live in Lancaster but I'm sick of having to drive for an hour for a decent off road ride.
Due to a combination of factors I'm free to relocate.
I'm thinking Horwich looks good next to rivington, but where else in the bolton/bury area could i be looking?

I live in horwich and I like it, the towns busier than it was when I moved here 12 13 years ago. its got good transport links and a good selection of shops.

its not the poshest place but I have no intentions to move, other Bolton options as Egerton and entwistle. though Chorley and Brinscall have riding too.

Ridings good but its a good place to travel from too, hebden and tod 1 hr south lakes an hour north wales 90min.

if you wanted a tour and a beer myself and Baz can take you out, I ride most Wednesday nights from my house as I back onto the path into rivvy.

rivvy is reachable from most of the places as he notes Bolton also allows you the flat paths to Manchester and access to the East Lancs moors [ ish] ...some riding from home to get to them. Chorley has rivvy but its an hour by bike to Darwen tower or Rivvy mast

Dunc I also ride weds currently on a Orange coloured SS [ with another SS from this parish] say hi if we bump into each other!!!

i'm in horwich too. ideal for riding from the door really; i'm near the crown roundabout not that far from dunc and from mine it's a couple of minutes on small quiet residential roads to get to the same path his house backs onto, or the green lane that runs behind rivington school along to the barn.

Earlier this year I moved to Over Hulton (BL5) from Liverpool to live with the missus.

So many more options for riding than Liverpool obviously but what i would say is being that 10/15mins from Winter hill is also really annoying still, so close yet so far for a quick before work ride or similar. If we move I will be sure to move closer to Horwich / Blacked / Lostock / Markland Hill area's so I can ride from the house easily & still have the good transport links as I still work in Liverpool & the missus in Manchester.

Depends on your transport links but for me Egerton & Entwistle are that bit more hassle for work etc.

Town or village preference?

As mentioned, Chorley's the other obvious town option - you could ride in to Healy Nab, Brinscall Woods and Great Hill. Rivi in one direction, Tockholes and Darwen Moor in the other.

Winter Hill has the biggest concentration of trails though.

Used to live in Markland Hill. Great riding from doorstep straight up Old Kiln Lane onto Winter Hill and plenty in between. No shops or rail link though like Horwich-which still has a bike shop!

Horwich is a real mixed bag. Chorley New rd isn't great, but head 1/2 mile the other way from the Beehive Roundabout and you are on the edge of Lostock, which is lovely.
Similarly, head up onto Chorley Old Rd and it's much nicer. I lived on Victoria Rd (behind the baths) for a short while twixt university courses and enjoyed the easier access to Winter Hill.

How about Belmont as a left field option?

I live in Horwich, probably the best place for MTB and road bikes. I can ride 500 meters and be off road for hours. Always loads of MTBers when Im out, never ride with many as they all pull their faces as I like to press on a bit.

Lived in a few place in Bolton and been MTBing for 29 years so I know the score.

Ramsbottom kicks Horwiches ass in every way, except rail links to Manchester. Top riding every direction, more rely good places to eat and drink than you can shake a stick at.

My in laws live in Horwich (just up the road from a pub called The Beehive) but i have never been anywhere else other than their house. It sounds like it has potential for me to take the bike one day and go for a pootle for an hour or two. Strange place though as they live in quite a big house with large gardens on a very private road with similar size houses yet its surrounded by an estate that only seems to house teenagers in shell suits and Kickers shoes.

Does it need to be West Lancashire? Todmorden/Calderdale is pretty awesome (although as a western Lancastrian I do technically live in Yorkshire now), great riding, food, and rail links.

The Bottom O'th Moor area of Horwich has great riding straight from the door - it also happens to be a nice area to live.
On the outskirts of Bolton - Belmont is good, Egerton and Edgworth are also good.
I'm originally from the Smithills area of Bolton which also has decent riding right on the doorstep with Smithills Moor + Winter Hill/Rivvy.
I've recently moved over to Aspull on the outskirts of Wigan and the terrain flattens out a bit over here, it's still easy to get to Rivvy/Smithills Moor by car and throwing the bike in the back etc, but it's not the same as riding straight from the door, as i hate riding on roads.
I wouldn't move back to Bolton for a gold clock though.

I live in Chorley and have done for years because the riding is so good, and it's so well connected. I can have completed a lap of the Nab from my house within 30minutes, which is great when you don't have much time to ride. One advantage of Horwich though is that it's within Greater Manchester so public transport to Manchester is significantly cheaper. Transport back after a concert/night out is a bit rubbish which is one of the reasons why I'm looking at moving closer.

There is obviously more to life than riding and you don't say what else you are looking for with a place to live. But I'd also look further East, Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall etc.which have more of a feel of being more in the mountains.

Edgworth (no second 'e') is a great location for riding.
Train in to Bolton/Blackburn from Entwistle & a few good pubs.
Winter Hill, darwen Tower, Peel Tower & Lee/Cragg quarry are all rideable from the doorstep.
Good schools if that is your thing.

Ramsbottom - would also be up there - Great for Peel Tower, Lee/Cragg.
Straight on the motorway for Dales/Lakes or Peaks.
And plenty of good restaurants on your doorstep.

Rammy also has 2 tapas restaurants, four possibly five craft breweries, its own music festival, MTB festival on its door step. The BLACK PUDDING THROWING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Thomas the tank engine runs services out of the train station (as dose santa). You cant fail to get a decent pint anywhere

I like rammy n it is somewhere I could live but horwich beats it for transport links.

Depends on where you need to get too

Both look good, but looking at houses you get a bit more for your money in horwich.

I don't know where I'll need to get too as I'm planning on getting a job nearby (teaching) there are plenty of schools in the area
