No red ring, just won't play games properly and DVDs go all pixallated. Mates just said it might be something called a SATA cable but that was a quick google result. Anyone?
Anyone?
Ours is currently up the spout in possibly a similar manner to yours; it seems to take ages before it will actually read discs properly which can have funny effects. 'Tis fairly common apparently; it's the circuitboards on the CD drive going dodgy or something like that. You can replace them, but because the drives are matched to the motherboard it requires finding the exact same type of drive and swapping drive controller boards over. There are places that will do it, but it sounds like it's not really much cheaper and far more faff than just buying a new one. (Especially as the new-ish ones are smaller, quieter and have built-in wifi compared to our old one).
We're just going to get a new one in the new year. Until then we shall continue turning it on 20 minutes before we want to use it, and repeatedly hitting open-close to get it to notice we put a disc in...

How old is it? Send it back to MS?
Surely if it doesn't work you can self-diagnose it as broken...then go to a shop to repair it by buying a new one? Is this not how these kind of things were fixed?
