Hi all,
Moved into flat today, so me and flat mate need a load of stuff- microwave, kettle, toaster, kitchen utensils, bins, crockery etc.
We're cheapskate students so want cheap stuff, but still fairly decent.
Wheres best to look- Argos? Ikea?
Ta, Duane 🙂
Ikea for the furniture. Hit the internets for the electrical stuff...Amazon etc.
Asda or Tesco is good for cheap electicals
Auctions, community furniture warehouse, charity shops, freecycle.
Tesco for appliances
Ikea for furniture and kitchen equipment ie bins pans etc.
No-one does better furniture for cheaper than Ikea.
have a freecycle project 🙂
beg borrow etc... off friends/relatives
Ikea when it all goes pear shaped, and Tesco for cheapy lecci items.
Ikea for cheap kitchen bits - chopping boards, pots, pans, glasses etc.
John Lewis & supermarkets for appliances. Some cheap stuff is fine - microwaves for example, but I've never found a cheap toaster that can actually evenly toast.
JL are very good as they price match others, and only sell decent quality stuff.
Car boot fair for most of that lot for pennies
No-one does better furniture for cheaper than Ikea.
This is true. Have a look around their bargains/seconds/damaged section. Massive discounts on stuff that's just a bit scuffed etc. You students will wreck it in no time anyway, what with all your parties and that, so no point is spending too much.
freecycle, charity shops etc etc
alternatively leave the place empty, hire it out as a party flat then go an live from one womans bed to the next

In ours, the bargain section is full of stuff that's absolutely trashed and is like 20% off. There's the odd 50% off item but it's usually smashed in two or something.
Freecycle....I've just had someone come round and pick up a perfectly fine double bed and mattress for her daughters first flat.
I was going to throw it in the tip but she was well chuffed with it.
Check freegle too.
4 quid for a kettle in Sainsburys at the moment. 4 quid!!
warning about tescos cheapest microwave - we had one - it used to come on by its self - the replacement did the same .... some might say we had ghosts ... id say it was dodgy shit ....
bought a samsung after that !
you can sometimes get quite decent furniture at the local skip
don't buy the really cheap toaster, kettle microwave etc - they are scarily shoddy. had a toaster that melted with use and covered your toast in plastic. and a kettle that leaked water into the electrics if you left water in it after use, shocking the next person to switch it on!!
all supermarket stuff.

Also known as 'living the dream'
british heart foundation, charity shops, etc.
avoid ikea/argos/etc
Yeah don't get the Tesco Value stuff.
Should be rebranded the Tesco False Economy range.
Why avoid Ikea? Don't avoid Ikea.
Avoid Ikea if you don't like good value furniture! And if you don't like seeing the occasional rude product name.
Tesco is not too bad for "Value" appliances. I've got a Value hand blender that just refuses to die on me.

No because that's the Cardiff/Newport branch and people actually pay extra for furniture that has been 'pre-distressed'.
Our patio table and chairs were in that section and have lasted through two classic British summers with no issues. Mind you, this last one has done the table a bit, but the chairs and bench still work well.
