I have a big party coming up (which we are hosting at home) so need to buy a large amount of beer, cider, lager, wine etc.

Is there anywhere available online to bulk purchase cheaply or would I be best off just watching out for supermarket deals over the next few weeks?

Costco if you've got a mate who's a member. Might not be a massive bargain compared to supermarkets though.

Local breweries for polypin / barrel if you're not lager drinkers?

Majestic, get your loan glasses there and take back returns of any left over booze. Allows you to buy a little more than you think you need and should work out as cheap in the long run.

iirc you're from around South Leeds, if so try Clarkes Brewery at Wakefield. They hire you a bar setup for draught beers etc. If you want to push the boat and impress then hire one of the mobile bars that are around.

Local brewery. For example, Milton Brewery will sell you 72 pints for £84.

For beer then Roosters in Knaresborough will do barrels of beer for you and supply the pump as well.

When we stocked the bar for our wedding we got a couple of barrels from the local brewery then bottles on special from the supermarket. Picked up some reasonable ales at £1 a bottle and some at 4 for £5. Didn't want to just have barrels so there was a bit of variety and leftovers were easier to deal with. We got the wine from one of the big off licenses that did free glass hire. They were happy to provide pint glasses even though we only bought wine.

no idea on prices these days but me and a mate went over to France with a transit van and filled it up with booze from hypermarkets near Calais

Edit - just noticed you live in Yorkshire so probably far too much of a trek unless you make a weekend of it too

When is it again?

Costco is good, if the supermarkets dont have offers on (yeah, right...)

😆 at this thread. Bizarrely enough I work for Majestic Wine in Harrogate.

We're probably not the cheapest for beer (as we don't sell Stella, Fosters, Carling etc) but can sort you out with your wine / gin etc.

If you can make it over the Channel then Majestic have a store in Calais, same stuff just at French rates of duty.

For our wedding, my dad nipped over and filled his car up for us. An easier trip from Kent than Harrogate though 😀

As said, for beer it's worth talking to smaller breweries direct.

if the offers are right , like 6 wine for £25(which just ended in our store), a lot of folk buy lots of booze from a big supermarket chain like a**a, get it delivered free. if you know someone that works there, they get 10% off too
Though you need to cover yourself, if they suddenly get out of stock of what u want, they may try delivering you something different, or even claim to be out of stock of any wine completely.
dont count yr chickens before theyve hatched

GooseEye in Keighley will also sort you a keg and pump. Did it 2 years running for bonfire night!

2nd year went for the paler session ale, and everyone was on it....even the ladies. Ended up left will all the lager brought by folks!

You're not the cheapest for wine either 🙂 (example: Villa Maria sav blanc, Majestic:£8.99, me:£7.99, Brancott est sav blanc: Maj: £8.99, Me:£7.99 etc etc). I'm in the wine retail trade as well and if it was me, I'd buy the wine at Aldi (it galls me to say, but their wines are generally good and very cheap), a nine of ale (72 pints?) from Daleside assuming they do the bar kit as well (just a guess, others are available, Daleside Blond would be my 1st choice if the planets aligned - price), lager / cider case deals from supermarkets, one that does glass hire if that's a requirement (Morrisons?). if you need trendy prem Gin, I'd also just go for Supermarket offers (again, galls me to admit but no one can compete against a supermarket offer on acceptable prem Gin brands Opihr, Bloom, Sipsmith, Bathtub, Martin Millars etc).
I'm not a million miles away, but I wouldn't use either me or Majestic TBH. Is there a Bargain Booze near you? (there's one in Otley) Honestly, they have a good range and work on low margins/high turnover (somewhere around 10% I believe, Majestic margins will be more like 30% or more). But Supermarket 'Footfall / loss leader' offers if you can.

We'll price match but have to agree, some interesting pricing decisions in elation to the falling Pound at the moment.

Aldi wine is great, I love their exquisite collection Limoux, and their £5 stuff is generally good.

Oh, other thing to consider might be 'sale or return' (returning unopened bottles/cases), again some supermarkets/retailers will offer this, ask!, might be a consideration v's price, most will accept a % return, ask what % they accept as a return/refund. If you're a drinker yourself, then not an issue 😉

Thanks for all the replies - does anyone have a link to a spreadsheet showing supermarket special offers (I have seen one do the rounds before Christmas most years).

Cheers

For our wedding I went to a local independent wine merchant explained what we wanted and he sorted the whole package. He selected wines for tasting, to help us choose what we were going to have. He also provided a bulk delivery with discount and accepted returns on the order. I think we spent £1-2k on wine with him (can't recall exactly)

did a wedding last year. supermarket was cheapest by a long way. except for ale; direct from the brewery.

Costco had a limited range and not actually that cheap on cheaper stuff. larger, wine under a tenner a bottle etc.

Yes we did a similar thing for our wedding, but with the local (independent) off licence. This summer's affair is going to be much less fancy.
