Bad day. The poor guy who gave up his lovely dog to us due to his family emigrating decided he wants his dog back after a week. So he is going a and I need to replace him.
I've two girls 8 and 12, so don't want a problem dog.

So I'll check out blue cross, animal concern, dogs trust and local papers. are there any others I've missed?
Or do you have a suitable dog? I'll try to avoid anything too girly. I need something that can fell run and follow a bike.

RSPCA, we got an afgan off them many years ago.

PDSA,

Local council dog wardens/home for lost dogs.

Beaware walking into such a place, you may want to walk out with many dogs, theres so many dumped or neglected dogs out there.

www.Dogpages.org.uk & Dogs Trust worked for us.

Dogs Trust really took the time to make sure the one we got fitted with our lifestyle & we've had a very happy 10 years with her. RSPCA wouldn't even give us the time of day (Brighton Branch) ๐Ÿ™„

Retired greyhound trust.
Make great pets, fantastic with kids but don't expect them to run for ages. They can sprint like buggery for a little while and then they collapse in a heap for the rest of the day.

Dogs Blog is a good site as it has dogs from a number of rehoming centres.

We got our dog from Pupsneedinghomes having first found them on dogs blog.

+1 for dogs trust.

They really take their time and make sure you get the right dog for you. And that you are right for the dog.

Had 2 dogs from smaller local rescue centres. Both great dogs but there was not so much care taken over the dog's personality traits and suitability than at teh dogs trust.

The poor guy who gave up his lovely dog to us due to his family emigrating decided he wants his dog back after a week

What a nightmare. I hope you all get sorted, and another dog gets a good home with you.

Try The Dogpages: http://www.dogpages.org.uk/

You can either search for rescues that are local(ish) to you, or if you know which breed you'd prefer, search by breed.

Also take a look at dogsblog: http://www.dogsblog.com/

+1 for Dogs trust, Blue cross were useless. Have a Google for any local pet rescue charities. We got our two off Forest dog and Animal house rescue. We go and support their fund raising events which are great fun.

Any of the breed associations will have welfare sections that rehome dogs. Most do a very good job of matching dog to family. Beware those that have a dotty person in charge of re-homing, they tend to be un-professional and anything wrong is the humans fault.

I wouldn't touch the RSPCA with your barge pole. Odious organisation.

Ollie came to us 10 months ago, aged 10 months!
He has his moments, but is ace!
I too have kids and that was a concern, but they sorted us out with the right dog, not just a dog!

+1 for breed specific rehoming. You can focus on a breed you like and also they tend to be families in crisis who have taken good care and are well adjusted.
Also you could try 'The Field' http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/marketplace/directory/3772/4008 . They have a selection of fully trained dogs! They will cost more but if you add up the grief, training, chewing and stuff its a good idea. We have a 10 month springer and had I thought of it I would have got a fully trained one!
