When would be a good time to do an AMA on sleep tomorrow?

I'm a GP with an interest in sleep. In another thread the subject has come up and I've agreed to do an AMA on it tomorrow.

I'm planning on being available for a couple of hours to try and answer any questions tomorrow, is there a particular time of day that would be best for people?

I'm going to try and fit a short bike ride in too as the weather forecast is looking ok for once, so I'm going to try and work it around that.

I too have a keen interest in sleep, and therefore suggest it takes place after about lunchtime

after midnight to get the real insomniac's? *

* Couldn't resist, but I appreciate it's a serious subject, as my partner really struggles with it.

Good try, but as a sleep "expert" 😉 , I shall be safely tucked up in bed, and asleep.

I'm on a late call with the west coast at midnight for a couple of hours. I tend to sleep badly after those, so 3AM works for me 😉
realistically PM is probably best for me tomorrow, and you can catch the rays in the AM

I'm interested!

Just post a time and link and I plan to be there, I'm very flexible (but not adter 10pm!). Thanks, it'll be interesting to hear what you have to say 👍

I have diagnosed periodic limb movement disorder, but stopped taking the the clonazepam for it a decade to go due to problems it was causing, so now just have very disturbed sleep.

Also on the (very long) waiting list now for OSA assessment. I snore like a rhino and have deviated septum (still) despite an op 20+ years ago and adenoids and tonsils gone.

Currently just have a raised bed head, nasal dilator and becanase to help. Obviously other sleep hygiene like black out blinds, no phone/TV etc in bed, same time to bed and getting up.

Any extra ideas very much appreciated 😁

interested, how will it work / what platform?

I can get to sleep no problem, I'm a chronic waker (not a spelling error!) - I wake up midway through the night - sometimes for a wee but sometimes just because and then I can toss for ages (easy!) with a head full of worries mainly that stop me going back off.

I'll just do it on here, start a thread, hang around for a couple of hours and try and answer as many questions as possible.

Why not just start a thread and leave it going. Keep dipping back in to check questions and post answers.

People can read it when they can't sleep then...

Because that's a bit too much of an open ended commitment.

Rogan had a great guest on sleep a few years ago. Professor Matthew Walker the director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley. I learned a lot from this one and I've re-watched it several times as it's so interesting

Matthew Walker is very interesting and I've read his book. However for most people who are worried about sleep, I think he's part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

Part of the issue for me with the whole "Wellness" industry, is that it's business model relies on convincing people that there's something potentially wrong with them, when in fact, there isn't.

Important topic! Very kind of you to suggest.

I have previously struggled to get to sleep, but Sleep Station (CBT for insomnia) got me back in shape.

I would agree though that Dr Matt Walker, that whilst an expert on this isn't without some criticism, statements like "sleep is the most important thing.. " "Without sleep we are.. " which for some does not in any way help, and can maybe feed the problem.

Cheers

Agreed, and he has a tendency to conflate data from sleep deprivation studies (an artificial external process) with disordered sleep (an internal process) too.

That’s my neice - she’s swallowed every ‘wellness’ trope going and she’s more screwed up than she was 10 years ago.

Was a time agreed Kramer?

Had an interesting relationship with sleep - never an issue for me until my mid 20s where i experienced some, likely very normal, difficulties. I then got very into the whole wellness sleep hygiene stuff which was just taking off at the time. This just made the issue worse ultimately and i suffered from sleep anxiety. I try to be a lot more relaxed about it now and generally it's good - never go to bed until I'm literally falling asleep so never have an issue drifting off.

Early wakings do still plague me however, especially if I've got things to be up and out for. Be interested to hear your thoughts on that, it's like a part of my consciousness  doesn't believe me when i say I'm more relaxed about sleep hygiene.

what is an AMA?

(am assuming this is a joke, but just in case).

AMA stands for Ask Me Anything - an opportunity for people to ask an expert/celebrity/someone with a particular view questions about their expertise/celebrity/views. People post questions, and the expert replies to them.

jj: Here's my AMA. Why would you think it's not a joke, when directly above the question he's actually quoted what an AMA is? 🥴
