I don't like Starbucks for a whole number of reasons, not least of which is their coffee.

That said, this certainly looks like a remarkable endeavour.

I guess I'm morally obliged to suspend my dislike.

I'd far rather they paid their staff a decent wage than give more money for the government to spunk up the wall. More real world benefit. Good on them.

Like the staff being able to afford their rent deposits that sort of real world benefit eh ? Oh hold on a minute

Anyway they are not mutually exclusive its not either or is it.

"The corporation transferred money to a Dutch sister company in royalty payments, bought coffee beans from Switzerland and paid high interest rates to borrow from other parts of the business in order to post losses."
They can't brew coffee but they can "cook books"

That's a nice story, but it won't persuade me to buy their coffee.

'Scuse my cynicism, but the first thing I think when a Corp does something like that is 'what's in it for them?' Tax breaks? Tying in workers to contracts? Positive PR/Burying bad news? Dunno. But what I do know is that shareholder held companies hardly ever do anything out of the goodness of their hearts. There's ALWAYS an angle. Money rules.

If Starbucks paid their taxes there might be more social housing for their staff to rent?

I'm sticking with Costa and Cafe Nero

According to the link :

The coffee chain earlier this year turned its first UK profit in 17 years.

So they doggedly carried on in the UK despite not making a profit for the first 16 years, now that's something I think they should be applauded for.

Here's a multinational company who isn't solely motivated by greed and profit - selling us coffee flavoured watered-down hot milk is obviously more important to them than making a profit.
