Don't put tomato on whatever you do. It will come out and sit on your face at 190 degrees centigrade. This then leaves a lovely blister for about 3 weeks. Naughty tomato

I think the fat, which makes up the greater bulk, melts and soaks into the bread. Still delicious though.

Cheese choice is crucial.

I find that Raclette is the ideal melting cheese - the balance of fat to solids is such that it retains the vast amount of it's bulk on being melted - hence it gets used for Raclette grilling, and if you are in a fancy mood, then you can make a cheese toastie with it.

And always fetches that little bastid bit of skin off behind your top two front teeth!

My 14 yr old, who could live on toasties, suggests chopping ham up and mixing this in with the cheese first to thicken it up.
This though makes a Ham & Cheese Toastie (or is it Cheese & Ham?) and not just cheese as per the original question!

I put marmite on my toasties, which seems to keep the cheese together and prevent it from soaking in.

So a barrier system seems to be key..

I never thought toasties and sex had much in common

30 seconds to warm up then it's all over in a couple of minutes?

EDIT: My ultimate combo would be mature cheddar, corned beef, onion and a dab of english mustard. For the toastie that is.

One of my mates took that to the next level - jam toastie ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Try halloumi & pesto
You can't beat cheese that squeaks when you're devouring it

Mayo on the bread, sprinkle of Worcester sauce and a few bits of chopped shallots for a bit of crunch

In America I had grilled cheese sandwiches which were good but I tried to do them here and it went wrong, very wrong ๐Ÿ™ I am usualy quite competent in the kitchen so blamed my failure on the wrong kind of cheese.
