I know nothing about the fairer grape so please, recommend a half (cheapish) decent bottle.
Sivooplay:)~
Personal choice would be a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
2nd a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, a very safe choice.
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. In fact, any Marlborough (New Zealand, btw) Sauvignon Blanc will do for me. The Sainsburys one is very good and often on offer so about 60% of the price of the Oyster Bay one.
Edit:
Ha, all posted at the same time. Good taste fellas!
Saying the above, a few more details like budget, why the purchase, tastes of the drinker might give you a better and/or more interesting answer.
Aldi Pinot Grigio £4 seems ok (mother likes it anyway)
Well that's that then..
Marlborough sauvignon blanc hands down is the one.
That was painless, cheers all.
(off to the offie I shall go...)
I always buy Sauv Blanc. What else should I try?
Sweet: Sauterne if you're not too worried about price, Jurançon doux for a little less and a hint of acidity. Bergerac doux for something affordable.
Medium full body: French Tokay Pinot Gris.
Medium: German Riesling from Lidl.
Dry: no idea, I don't drink it.
Lots of French and German whites to rival new world wines.
Gavi.
It's not the cheapest though.
Interesting alternatives to predictable Marlborough sav blanc:
Albariño from Rias Baixas, Spain
Riesling from Clare Valley, Aus
Chardonnay from Margaret River, Aus
All great with food.
Marlborough sav blanc or sainsburys taste the difference Languedoc
In terms of grape, my favourite White is Gewürztraminer. Not that common, but a good one is bloody lovely.
Gavi.It's not the cheapest though.
There's a good one on at £6.50 in Waitrose.
They also have a sublime Pecorino at £7.50 (Sheep on the label), or for the same price a Slovenian Pinot Grigio/Sauv Blanc with a yellow label..
I always buy Sauv Blanc. What else should I try?
Alsace and/or New World Riesling (If Alsace, then older the better, pref 9 / 10 yo), Gewurztraminer, Viognier, Meursault, Alberino, Gavi, Orvieto, verdicchio, Soave, Semillon,
I really like new world pinot gris Marlborough and such like villa maria do a very drinkable one.
Obviously budget is an issue but currently the Lidl kiwi sauv blanc at £5.89 is a bargain but if I had to choose a wine to drink forever a white burgundy (Macon Village) is my choice.
No need to stick to gooseberry juice
The wonders of the Cote de Beaune await....
Ok outside the budget but save up and buy some decent white
Can't remember the brand/label, but the white Rioja that Sainsburys sells is great.
Italian Pinot Grigio if I am poor
Sancerre if I am flush
Aldi Gavi @ £5.49 a bottle is very nice, just about to open another bottle..
Godello
Picpoul
Macabeo
Macon Cruzille is THE best white wine I have ever tasted. Nothing like what I knew as a white wine/ a kind of slight whisky taste. It must be from a certain vineyard/ cave though, as we had another some 5 years later and it was nowhere near as nice. Still very good though. Failing that a Chateau Cajus organic from Bordeaux. Had it at our wedding.
Is there a Riesling that doesn't smell of WD40?
Rocketman, see above, seriously, I'm not a big Riesling fan but was recommended that and it's absolutely brilliant.
