Mostly self adhesive vinyl.
Ahh, just wondered. I maintain the machinery that makes film for photographic applications amongst other things. They dwarf any printer 😆

I remember donkeys years ago getting to play with Roland large format pen plotters when they were first around. We used to marvel at the way the so-called optimisation resulted in a seemingly random series of pen movements.
Sadly I don't get to play with anything particularly exciting these days. What impressed me most were the Zeiss glass plate camera and stereo comparators I used for photogrammetry as a student.
