I can't say I have a favourite album ever (my favourites change over time).
However two albums I keep coming back to are:
Whats Going On - Marvin Gaye
Greetings from LA - Tim Buckley
Current favourite album though is Doc Watson's Trouble in Mind country blues comp (with emphasis on the country).
MF - I second Black Sunday, I havent listened to the Hill for ages......where can i get me some weed?????
There's no way on earth I could choose one album. Some of the most memorable, life changing milestones over the years are:
Mike Oldfield - Incantations & Ommadawn
Slayer - reign In Blood
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
RHCP - Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic
Hallucinogen - Twisted
Shpongle - Are You Shpongled?
Plastikman - Muzik
Eat Static - Abduction
Sven Vath - The Harlequin, The Robot & The Ballet Dancer
Oops, that's a top ten, soz!
so many to not put at the top :O/
janes addiction - nothings shocking
dj shadow - endroducing
wonderstuff - eight legged groove machine (oh shoosh!)
del tha funkee homospapien - i wish my brother george was here
prince - sign of the times
stone roses - stone roses
nwa - straight outta compton. lol
Rory Gallagher ~ Tattoo
Always will be puuuuuuuuuuure classs.
But in the day I also deeply loved:
Be Bop Deluxe ~ Sunburst Finish
MF - I second Black Sunday, I havent listened to the Hill for ages......
I still love that album!(their first one was even better.)
Think they went off the boil after that though - not keen on the metal crossover and R&B sounds creeping in...
I saw them live a few times in their heyday - superb!
The thing I like about favourite music threads, is the massive diversity!
One person's all-time fave band / album ever - and you've never heard of them / it!
Variety is the spice n' all that! 😀
The Pleasure Principle - Gary Numan
Public Enemy - It takes a Nation of Millions...
Ministry - Land of Rape & Honey
Orbital - Brown Album
& late entry: Fennesz - Black Sea
Faith No More, Angel Dust
Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Pink Floyd, Pulse
Pretty much anything by Rolling Stones
Beatles, White Album
Ocean Colour Scene, Moseley Shoals
I'll second Whats Going On - Marvin Gaye, class album.
Also I'll throw in Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth.
I can never do these because my pick would change from day to day.
In the top few would definitely be
Wonderstuff, Hup
Billy Bragg, Worker's Playtime
Barenaked Ladies, Born on a Pirate Ship
Aztec Camera, High Land, Hard Rain
Ben Folds 5, Whatever and ever Amen.
Goldie Lookin Chain, greatest hits
Fat Boy Slim, YOu've come a long way baby.
The Smiths, The Smiths
its gotta be:
Rev by Ten foot pole or
Smash by Offspring
if your talking about truly starting from scratch - from zero then I would suggest some of the following - many of them fairly predictable "critics favourites" but they do keep getting on those lists for a reason
beach boys - pet sounds
beatles - revolver
stones - exile on main street
Motown Gold
Van Morrisson - Astral Weeks and His Band the Street Choir
Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
My personal favourites - just beacuse I like them
Steve Earle - I Feel Alright
Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix
Lemonheads - It's a shame about Ray
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Master and Everyone
Lemonheads - It's a shame about Ray
That nearly made my list too. 😀
OOh there's been some good'uns so far. Esp entroducing(it's just always the right album to play) can't go wrong with Portishead, lamb , FSOL, Nick Drake and Bonnie Prince Billie are amazing as well.
Saul Williams, Amethyst Rock Star is class
Public Enemy, Apocolypse 91 (the enmy strikes black)
DJ Krush,Meiso
Madvillain, Madvillainy (instrumentals)
All the Dan the automator instrumental albums (deltron3030, Amuch better tommorow and DR octagon)
GZA, Liquid swords (you know it's good)
Gillian Welch, Revelator
And just a million others but playtimes over bitches. I've got some bilges to clean and some pipework to repair so i'm out!
Good shout Fingerbike!! - I used to know Andy Turner (Aim) a bit
Led Zep - IV
Substance?? Compilations don't count! Try Technique, every track's a coconut. ....And not one mention of Joy Division?? Unknown Pleasures and Closer should be in every music lovers collection
AC/DC - Back in Black
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon
Sex Pistols - Never Mind . . .
Mike Oldfield - Discovery
John Hiatt - Greatest Hits
Bob Seger - Greatest Hits
Van Halen - Fair Warning.
@Johnhoo - I know, Decadent early 90's short term memory loss moment there.
What I meant was:
Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Nirvana - Nevermind
Also need to add
Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
The Cult - Electric
Prince - Purple Rain
Wonderstuff - Eight Legged Groove Machine
This thread should be closed by the mods on musical grounds... 😉
Clash by the Clash is a classic
Forgot....
Metallica: Black Album
Pearl Jam: Ten
Pearl Jam: Vs
And of course no album collection would be complete without Guns 'N' Roses: Appetite for Destruction
By the way...... if anyone knows the manager of Cycle Surgery in Bristol..... put in a word for me, I applied for a supervisor's job there earlier but can't get there Friday for an interview as I'm working.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Radiohead - The Bends
Led Zeppelin - How The West Was Won
Yes - The Yes Album
This lot always sound good to me but there are many others too...
Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children
Breeders - Last Splash
Pearl Jam - Ten
Renegade Soundwave - Soundclash
Cake - Fashion Nugget
I can't believe Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, isn't on anybody's list.
Leftfield - Leftism
Some great calls on here, but it's Pet Sounds for me please
but Faure's Requiem gets a close second...
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon
How very peculiar. I know we all have our own tastes, but Sabbath AFTER Ozzy left, then Ozzy after Randy Rhodes left (to go and die).
Surely Blizzard of Oz or Diary of a Milkman are vastly VASTLY V A S T L Y superiour to the tat that was Barf at the Moon?????????
Liking Mr Agreeable's and wee al's.
But you're only allowed one!
Sounds like no other record, before or since. The production is just out there. I dream of owning a 180gm double-vinyl instrumental version but apparently Terminator X has the only copies of those in existence.
Introduced the 13 year old 2tyred to just about everything.
The Allman Brothers Band -at Fillmore East
m-f - I never could get into Sabbath with Ozzy, but like nearly all their stuff since. Even the album with Ian Gillan that no one else seems to like!
And Ozzy post Sabbath has always amazing.
I chose BATM for nostalgic reasons, bit Randy really was the master.

job done; for me!
don't know why the pic's not coming up - it's protection by massive attack - there you got three ablums that cover most eventualities.

Fair enough - each to their own - I guess that is why music is so wonderful, everyone finds their own thing in it. I must admit I can see nostalgia around BATM too - I grew up to it (and clearly recall the video 🙂 ), but tracks like Mother Earth, Mr Crowley, Over the Mountin and Flying High are superb.
err, I See A Darkness by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.
On the Axelrod/Funkadelic debate. Yes i concede Funkadelic's Afros are "tight" and indeed "fly" however i'm going with Axelrod.
2tyred, those bomb squad productions are amazing. It's a shame the only acts to carry a torch for the likes of De La Soul and P.E, in the kicking knowledge style of hip hop, are eh.... De La and P.E! Those guys are still making incredible hip hop.
I've been having a massive 90s music revival listening to all the stuff I had on tape but never replaced with CDs. Got a 90s playlist going on Spotify and have added Terrorvision, The Cure, Neds Atomic Dustbin and a few others to the ever growing collection.
Can I throw the following into the mix?

These days I'm just as likely to be found listening to Squarepusher, Future Sound of London or Boards of Canada or my Negro prison songs album. Variety is the spice of life.

Blue flowers!!
Mr agreeable, your talking my language. But today my favourite album is
