lovely. I have had a MK4 Spit an 1500 Dolly and a dolly sprint too. When Dancake JNR is all grown up, I would Love a TR5 or 6...

ooh bleedin' eck I wanted one of those so much when I was about 15 years old..

There was a bloke near us who had a pristine version in Colmans mustard yellow with all the bodywork deseamed and the suspension lowered.. that car used to make me quite ill with desire..

Some good choices there!

A personal favourite of mine was a Mk2 RS2000 custom that I owned. Twin 40's, 4-2-1 Janspeed manifold into a single box system. Sounded almost BDA like under hard acceleration. 8)

Used to go all over the UK in the mid/late 80's rally spectating, & the sounds of the Quattro's, 6R4's, & Lancia Delta S4's were proper hairs standing on the back of my neck stuff. Strangely though, the RS200 & the 205T16 didn't have the same impact.

My brother has a 1968 mkii convertible in primrose yellow I believe it's called. He's owned it twice, having crashed it quite badly in the south of France in the mid eighties and it not being economical to have it shipped back, it was left for dead. He spotted it in the auto trader whilst working down in Brum around 15 years later (the seller had brought it back and did it up). It's now in mint condition and gets a run out on sunny days.

Favourite sounding 'Race' cars are the older wrc cars running anti lag. Sound fantastic watching from the side of a stage!

Favourite sounding 'normal' car was the Subaru WRX I used to own. 3 inch straight through exhaust from the turbo back 😈

Some of the best fun cars I worked on: Hilman Holby Hunter I rebuilt from a write-off, so much fun sorting lots of "rattles" and setting it up 😉
VX Firenza droop snoot with Getrag gearbox
Triumph Stags...changed a few cylinder heads and engines 🙄 but was fun testing 😆
Rover P6 style V8s 😆

Audi R8 at Newcastle airport springs to mind 😆

Local boy racer has turned up with a Mondeo V6 with the obligatory big exhaust which does remind me of some of the above 🙄

There was a guy in the '70s who rallied a Hilman Imp with an exhaust system whereby he shifted a plate to allow a straight through system which sounded awesome 😆

I was stood on a window sill about 4 metres up on Deansgate in Manchester, took some climbing up a drain pipe to see Jenson Button in his Mclaren F1 car, the tall buildings were shaking with the sound of his F1 car, think I had a little s3x wee in my pants that day.

For me it has to be the Lancia Delta S4, hearing the supercharger and turbocharger hissing and blowing made it sound like a monster...

IMO it's got to be a car you have personally owned and/or driven at one time or other. People posting sounds of 'a' car on YouTube they have never personally experienced (apart from whilst watching top gear), doesn't cut it.
American Hemi V8's is about my limit of personal experience, a 66 Mustang and 56 Desoto, both sounded sweet on the throttle. My 56 Desoto was a throaty V8 chugger, my 66 V8 Mustang convertible roared in tunnels and under bridges.
I don't care about what you link to on YouTube, you need to have been sat behind the wheel, pressed the throttle and personally taken in the experience. That is your best car sound experience, not something you never owned or drove.

I used to have an Alfa 156 V6. I wasn't sure whether I really wanted the 2.5 over the much better 2.0 four, right up until I took it over 3,500rpm on the test drive.

I [i]HAD[/i] to have it. £6k later, I was the proud owner of a three year old, one owner V6 in Alfa Red.

On the drive home, I took it through the Dartford tunnel in second with all the windows wound down. I never broke the speed limit, but the motor sounded so glorious I couldn't help myself. A bloke overtook me on the other side with his arm out of the window and his thumb up.

The V6 is nose-heavy, slightly slow witted and it burns petrol at a prodigious rate (17mpg on that fateful journey) but I loved every second I had it.

I've a few fav sounding cars from the past 20 odd years driving, Lancia Delta HF Integrale i bought as a rear end shunt when i had recently served my time as a mechanic back in 1993, only 21 yrs old and driving quite possibly the quickest, most brutal point to point car i've ever owned, sold it after 6 months as i was going to kill myself in it no question asked but to this day i wish i had kept it.

Alfa Romeo 75 V6 was rather nice sounding but the bulkhead and rear di-dion suspension mounts were so rotten the car was eventually written off which was a shame as it had a sweet sounding exhaust note, especially through tunnels or deep sided valleys..

MK2 VW Sirocco with 2.1 overbored ABF fully lightened and balanced Tim Stilles tuned engine with stage 3 head and running newman 272 cams on twin 40's was a hoot - revved to 9000 rpm, very expensive to drive anywhere at 15mpg but the induction roar would suck small children from the pavement and spit them out the rear exhaust along with occasional burps of flames that made pedestrians shit themselves, i found it amusing at the time but totally impractical as an everyday road car as it went out of tune dependant on air pressure/air temperature/humidity levels so i detuned it for the road.

Mates old RS4 was nice sounding with full ABT tuned engine and handmade titanium exhaust, sounded the dogs bollox on full chap - 550 bhp+, unfortunately now sold as it only did 6000 miles in 4 yrs from new

His 1934 MG TA is nice sounding for a 1300cc engine, one of the original 6 built to gain the company funding to produce a production run so rather scarce with it's full race history.

My ABT 16v engined Mk2 Golf, posted yet again (snooze....) but it does sound very nice indeed so warrants a mention here even if i do say so myself.

But there has to be a winner and here it is, a mates 350bhp+ v6 supercharged Lotus Exige with full race spec including handmade titanium exhaust, not strictly road legal but who's going to catch him?. The noise this thing makes at full throttle is truly awe inspiring and gives rise to the effect known as "sex-wee", the engine sites a few inches behind your head and is in full view in the rear mirror at all times, Launch control is a hoot to play with and under 3 secs for the 0-60 is fun but brutal on the neck muscles, the in gear acceleration is far more amusing to play with, 30-70 mph literally does take a second or two and on the track it is unbeatable. My fav stretch of road to drive this is from Newton Stewart to New Galloway pass McMoab/Heartbreak Hill area for those that know it....it howls through the valley like a demon and as the road is entirely open in sections you can exploit it when safe to do so or when your using talkbalk radios.

Take 3.6ltrs + V8 + 2 rather large turbos + sequential box = music to my ears

Add to the fact there's little/no electronical b**gary going on and you realise that the brutal sound is all natural.

I defy anyone to listen to it and not want their car to sound like that!

(Disclaimer: I used to also really love the sound of my Saab on the overrun when she was blowing from a titanic sized hole in the exhaust so my ear might be slightly defective!)

p.s. the BMW Judd V8 highclimb car also sound acceptable

PJM1974 : 😀 It was in rather poor condition underneath but looked alright on the surface when i bought it, spent near enough £5000 on it last year with very extensive welding and new panels in floor, suspension mounts, inner/outer rear arches etc, all the running gear was removed and body stripped to bare shell and everything replaced with genuine VW parts down to the last nut n' bolt/washer apart from the usual Bilstein/Eibach/Brembo/Miltek/Quaife/Powerflex upgrades along with a one-off 194 bhp ABT 1900cc 16v tuned engine which in a sub 1000kg car makes for a pretty lively drive, sticks two fingers up and cocks it's rear legs/wheels very easily to the lardy MK6 Edition 35 GTi whether in a straight line or through corners. Hopefully this year it'll be going off the road to get a full respray in daytona pearl grey, same as mates RS4 above, used as a daily driver so certainly aint no show car as it's currently filthy and full of pine needles and mud from throwing my bike in the back - removed rear seats as i never carry passengers. If i can be arsed it does clean up rather well though, i have to admit to only detailing it once this year for the purpose taking pictures for the agreed insurance valuation of £5000, it has been washed twice though which is good going for me, i prefer to drive it, what's the point of having a clean car on back country roads?.

See, contraversially, I don't much like the noise the highly tuned, exotic stuff makes. Very impressive engineering, incredible power, but overly noisy, harsh on the ears and usually fairly high pitched at full chat, due to the high revs. I much prefer the deep throaty burble of a relatively mildly tuned large displacement V8. I love the rover powered TVR Griffith, which was really just a blueprinted ported and balanced range rover engine when all said and done, all be it with some very unusual exhaust manifolds, which I think help contribute to its unique sound. I've been around A LOT of rover V8s, and no one has ever managed to make it sound as rumblesome as a Griff.

I also remember when I was about 13 or 14, walking past an open garage door just as the unfamiliar looking car inside was fired up; I stopped and just listened to the gorgeous burble of that old yellow Boss Mustang for 10 or 15 minutes, capivated.

Not quite what the OP had in mind but when my hot Italian friend said 'Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggra' (sp) the other day as one went past both her and the car sounded nice.
