Was watching a top gear repeat on the tv earlier and it had the merc sls on there sounding absolutely fantastic at full chat.
got me thinking what my fave sounding car is.......
whats yours then ??
Mazda 787B @ 200mph+.
Double post
Can I offer a few of my own videos for selection:
ETA: Plenty more of those where they came from - what would sir like?
my old mini, when the friend who bought it off me visits i can hear it coming from a couple of roads away and it instantly makes me grin wildly and a hundred good memories flood right back 😀
top fuel dragsters, you can feel the sound shock waves effecting your body.
I started a DB5 once, the sound was amazing, Astons have a lovely growl. I quite like an original beetle too.
This.
Even driving round the pits the hairs on the back of your neck stand up;
at full chat it screams;
i still think a tuned bike with a naughty can sounds better than a car....altho i did have a v8 mustang years ago in canada that sounded very cool
Panoz GTR-1. Ear splitting V8 that you could identify from a campsite 2 miles from the track.
Ferrari 333sp. Such a silky smooth V12 tone
Will try and get some clips when not on my phone.
I saw/heard the 4 rotor Mazda engine in it's last race at Le Mans. It was certainly an interesting noise, too much like a jumped up Dyson vacuum for me though
I used to a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle with a 454cu LS6 engine, 454 bhp and just starting it up was estatic! on tick over is sounded so menacing. i sold it to my mate in order to buy my first house but I only have to hear an american big block chevy and the memories flood back!
bobby............ a mate of mine runs a tl1000 with a pair of akropovic cans on it, he sends it down the road on its back wheel and sets all the car alarms off on his estate
AJP8.
Autounion V16
Actually as a visual spectacle this one runs the BRM close;
42 litre Bentley flame thrower;
not many people get a round of applause for letting their car idle for a bit 🙂
That 787b is something else, but I'm also partial to the Gumpert Apollo
Nobby - top man for suggesting the Mazda.
How about a BDA Escort full chat on a forest stage - hearing it in the distance going up and down through the box as it gets closer, before bursting into view round the corner in a hail of stones and engine noise - makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time!
Got to be a GT40...
takes me back to watching them at Oulton Park when I was a kid. Though this ones a bit different to them 😀
Mk1 Escort Mexico I had sounded ace and shook every window in the house on tickover 😀
Showing my age here ...
Another fan of Escort Mk 1 & 2,
Lancia Stratos,
Quattro
and the Metro 6R4 always had a distinctive note !
any group N rally car 😀
Good thread!
Old - 'Audi Quattro' Rally-Car
New - 'Pagani Huyuara' - 700+ HP customs AMG engine with twin turbo - just short of orgasmic 😳
The Old American Block V8 as fitted to Range Rovers, Rover SD1, Aston Martins etc - just that lazy rich burble.
Favorite incarnation of it would be the AC Cobra..
Story goes that Shelby (the man) when selling his first Cobras stuck a $100 bill to the inside of the windscreen and told customers sitting in the passengers seat, if they could reach it before the car hit 60mph they could keep it...
subaru 2.5 (with a 'normal' exhaust) driven lazily just sounds lovely to my ears.
almost (but not quite) a bit like a spitfire - effortless and burblely.
nothing loud or clattery for me please.
OT - why do my videos never post as vids
Best sounding would be an Aston, even if I would rather have a Ferrari given a choice.
Jackthedog
I wonder how many people know what an AJP8 is ?
Heard a few on a tunnel run last weekend, also great on the over run.
The sound of cars being put through a crusher ?
theres a mum opn the school run with a TVR Griffith 400 with Straight through pipes, that sounds amazing,
used to reguklarly see a chapo in the village with a Toyota Hilux with a Blown V8 in it, intakes out the bonnet job, has the joy of hearing it at Full chat going up a two lane section just out of town,
stumbled into rally of cornwall some years back, Metro 6r4's sound Very nice!!!
An original Mini 1000 or a TVR
Has to be Mercedes AMG SLK, the one they use as the pace car for GP. It sounds like the space ship from the modern Star Wars films 🙂
Mrs Crispos dad has a 1971 Jaguar E Type. The sound and smell of this car is rediculous!
Double post. Soz
Any of the rally cars with anti lag 8) hearing that in a pitch black forest then the marshalls whistles ......... just brilliant.
A 1275cc Austin Sprite with a single exhaust, backing off in a tunnel, roof off, wonderful bubbling/backfiring sound, will never forget that, used to drive miles to find tunnels to that in 😉
subaru 2.5 (with a 'normal' exhaust) driven lazily just sounds lovely to my ears.
Now I am a bit older, have to agree with the above.

Could quite happily stand I'm the woods for hours just to listen to this!
S1 Quattro you say?
my mate's Escort - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG9_VnuNqnQ
or his previous rally car, 911 -

My old diesel Skoda - just for the feeling of relief when it starts each morning!
TVR
TVR
TVR
TVR
nothing compares
French Matra V12s always sounded fantastic. This clip of a Ligier Matra F1 is the best sounding clip I can find although the late 60s/early 70s Matra sportscars sounded wonderful. You can just about hear them screaming in the background during Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" film.
TVR = well tuned Rover V8
Peugeot 205 ... that french one ... Just cos it sounds so silly!
Hmmm, RS1800 (Group 4 Spec.) or a Group B 6R4, or maybe a hillclimb single seater, Pillbeam etc.
Not an RS1800, but a 16v valve Pinto conversion (Warrior?) I believe, but otherwise probably to Gp. 4 spec (two bonus single seaters) [url=
Trabant.
I drove a Ferrari 430 Spyder on Sunday. Now that sounded pretty good!
DB9
Mini 1000, with basic stage 1 kit.
MGB with a janspeed.
2 I have had, 1 I dream of, bet you can guess what I have had!
Patient: Doctor, Doctor! Whenever I break wind, it sounds like a small Japanese motor car.
Doctor: Calm down. I suspect you have a small, pus-filled area in your colon.
Patient: But how can you tell?
Doctor: Everyone knows an abscess make the fart go "Honda"
Thinking about it, just about anything nicely tuned sounds pretty damn good, and the opposite is also true. Anything not well tuned but with a large exhaust in an attempt to sound good to those who don't know any better sounds absolutely crap.
Most memorable exhaust notes I have heard.
Calloway Corvette (at Le Mans).
Lister XJS V12 7 litre
Metro 6 R4
F1 cars with a V10 in the back.
At the track day I went to at North Weald whre I drove the F430,the Maerati Gran Turissmo and Vanatge V8 also sounded pretty good.
Cobra didn't have a Rover/Buick V8 it was a Ford 289, then later a 427 cu in.
Or a Lamborghini Bat.
Enzo with Tubi exhaust. This clip is my all time classic.. At around 17sec's I cream myself:
There was another with a Tubi-exhausted Ferrari zooming past the camera man and on shift up I swear I had a hard on 8)
333sp - fast forward to 2mins (unless like like idling)
Panoz (prototype that followed the GT1) awesome V8, side-exit noise, especially from 1min 20s on
AJP8 engine was TVR original engine before the speed 6 wasnt it ??
I had a vw golf v5 once which when nailed sounded almost like the old group b quattro rally cars !!
my favourites are as follows....
original impreza turbo
f1 safety car
AMG engined mercs
nascar cars
shelby gt500
TVR speed 12
group b quattro
1> my old 1303 Beetle with a stainless steel exhaust
2> my old Nova with a bean can exhaust
3> Maserati Quattroporte
4> Citroen 2CV
my old Nova with a bean can exhaust 😯
sound of a galvanised bucket of nails being vigorously shaken from the front and a flatulent mouse hanging out the back, kind of thing?
sound of a galvanised bucket of nails being vigorously shaken from the front and a flatulent mouse hanging out the back, kind of thing?
🙂
when it was cold, yes, but you'd be surprised at the rich deep burbly raspy thunder that came out of the back end when it had warmed up - especially after a long motorway run.
it was such a contrast though as the previous owner had been meticulous in his eradication of rattles by putting random bits of sponge in literally every gap and join inside the car.
Was it a Peco big bore 4?
My 430bhp RX7!!
Was it a Peco big bore 4?
hell yes!
I deliberated for weeks over which Peco to get.
in the end, there was only one choice.
No video but my first car was a Mini 1275GT with a peco big bore, I was a total hooligan with that car and at night used to drag race with one of my neighbours who had a Mini 1000 with the same along Princes St in Edin circa 1991.
I moved onto a Lancia Beta HPE after that which had a large twin weber carb fitted, the noise of it sucking air into the engine was glorious, the engine was a rough as a bag of old nails at idle but at full chat it was smooth and would run all day (provided the days were like those on mercury...i.e. very short!)
This sounds good, in a 4-cyl car way, I use to have a standard Mi16:
This sounded good, before the gearbox lurched:
But this is brill, can you hear it yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQW1AUDhrok
+1 on the BRM V16
closely followed by a BDA in an escort
Matra 650 V12. Nothing comes close. I think I've just wee'd in my pants a little bit!
In the first vid fast forward half way then turn the sound up!
OMG how could I forget this! RIP Georg 🙁
Capri 2.8 Injection I had sounded nice.
oh and these:
first time i heard one in real life i just about shat myself SO LOUD! 😀
6R4 through the welsh forests for me.
This is a similar set up to how my mustang was...
